Hi Massood,
I had filed a couple of mos. back for my parents immigration. I believe the next step in the process is CIC will acknowledge receipt of the file and give me some sort of a reference number to it. Is this correct?
My Dad's visitor visa to Canada expires this November, my mom has one for another 10 yrs. I am a bit concerned that they won't renew my Dad's visa owing to his immigration processing. My question is, if they still have not acknowledged receipt of their file, is it even feasible to call them and ask them NOT to process the file and then re-apply once my Dad gets his visa renewed in Nov? If yes, would there be any associated risks as far as the file is concerned?
Thanks.

Just an update....CIC acknowledges the receipt in 20-30 days. You get a letter by mail stating your file no. and where the file is sent(ex CHC New Delhi). How come you haven't got any response as yet???
Haven't heard anything from them yet. One of my friends was telling me it takes them about 2 mos. to acknowledge so I'm expecting it any time.
But I guess if its 20/30 days then I'll try calling them and find out if they've received the application.
Thanks for the info.

Personal experience.
My bother in law(born canadian) married a US green card holder couple of months back. He put up her file for immi. to canada and got response in 20 days. Well, the case is different, but still it is Family Class. A few yrs back when I had applied for my parents. it was same.
I would suggest you to call CIC and they would be able to track down your application using your landed immigrant paper no.
It's a good idea to call CIC. Sometimes, files do get misplaced...

FYI
I just called CIC. They have advised me that right now for Parents application it takes "minimum" 4 months before they acknowledge receipt and assign a client number. For a spouse application, it is 37 days.
Going by this, it will be another 2 mos. before they give me a client number.
So coming back to my original question, is it possible to halt the processing now without incurring any sort of penalty? The idea would be to have my Dad apply for his visitor visa in November and then re-submit or re-start the application afterward. If this is possible, would this help and are there any pitfalls to doing this?
Thanks.
