I also have this doubt. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's novel was on 18th century Bengal...I wonder, who composed the first ever tune for this poem ? ...or how did the tune for this poem originate ?

What a bindaas site....Mercury go and take a look at that site.. I wonder if we can even get a copy of Vande Mataram in Gurudev's voice ! That would be the ultimate collection !

Unfortunately, I haven't found it on CD or in MP3 format.
But it is available on tape, alongwith lots of other Tagore songs in Gurudev's own voice.
..to be precise...nearing abt 5K...if you are interested...-----------------------------------------------------------------

Meghal,
I am practising this.
I was listening to it that prompted the question.
Vande Mataram is Sanskrit.
But I was doubful about the other parts. didnt sound like the Sanskrit I learned.
Yes its a Wonderful poem and even more wonderfully done by Lata / Hemant.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Duh Meghal !
I was referring to the poem in the novel..not the song in the film..The song was adapted from the poem ( and thats a different story by itself..how the music was composed...Anil Biswas ?)

On a side note...how would u rate Vande Mataram by AR Rahman ?...

YUCK. Even though I like ARRs music, he should not have taken the liberty of tampering with masterpiece. I just can't bear the sound of ARR yelling at top of his voice. I always changed the channel when it aired on TV. Lata's sound in that song sounds too jaded and old. Give me the original Hemant Kumar masterpiece anyday.
