I dont get it.
U come to this country looking for a \"brighter future\" and start with a labor job in order to meet the ends. Fine. Will u have enough time to look into the job u want or trained to do? Will u have time to do that? U have to attend interviews, looking over ads in newspaper and internet, etc.

Looking for a job itself is a job. If someone is working second shift, they may do ok (scheduling interviews before lunch, etc), otherwise they have to take time off from work. If u work for an agency, there may be a problem.

Do u think that everyone falls in this elite category?
If we have 25 family members (extended, if 25 sounds too big ;) ) living here, whats are the chances that no one works in labor?

I know a few who have gone thru the initial hardships and are making a lot more than educated engineers.... yep... 25-45$/hr

BTW, labor work also includes construction workers, right?
I know a construction worker who makes 90K+
I know an office secreatary who made 35K+ and then in the evenings worked as a steward in a bar.

Long time back, I had heard that garbage truck workers make 45$/hr... How does that sound ?

You do what you gotta do to support your family. Yep, there is a lot of dignity in Labor work in Canada. We shouldnt use the Indian way of looking at these jobs. Maybe its alright to see it like that in India(given the socio structure and other possibilities), but here we have to adapt our views.

What are you trying to say????
Have you ever heard or know something like, " I like to be a..........."
People choose their profession as per their liking and not circumtance. You are advocating for people to get into what pays more rather than what they like to do. Price tag of profession keep fluctuating. You will find on every cycle variation people changing their profession.
I do not agree with you, if I love to work as a application engineer no amount of money can satisfy me if it is not thru application engineer profession.
When we talk of labour job, we talk of dissatisfaction derived from work in Canada.

What i was trying to put forth here was, In this country :
a) The disparity (in terms of dignity & economy) between the educated/profesional folks and the general workers need not be of same proportions as in India. Everyone deserves respect for whatever they do in life.
b) The general workers can learn from examples set forth by their desi fellowmates that if they are willing to adapt, have the abilitiy and put in efforts, they can achieve what is perhaps only possible for the highly educated few in India.
As an example, With the years of experience behind you, if you can talk the native language, can mix with these folks, make them feel that you are one of them, then you could achieve much more just based on your personality skills. ( On a corresponding note, even the highly educated who cannot/dont go thru these adaptations find it difficult to climb their career ladder with as much ease)
c) Lot of people do choose their profession as per their circumstance and they even start liking it. You are perhaps one of the lucky few (like me who didnt have to go thru these pains). Every one doesnt necessarily pass out of college. But that doesnt mean they cannot earn more than us.
d) I am not advocating for people to go after money other than choosing what they like to do. What i am trying to do here is bring home the realization that irrespective of whether you are highly educated or not, it is possible to achieve much more in life if u abandon the shame that comes with the kind of work that less educated would resort to do. In this North American continent, most people change their careers more than once in their life time. Engineers have gone into construction. I have a friend who left a high paying supervisor job and went on to become a truck driver, etc,etc.... Its by choice...(their choice). For some people money is the motivation. whats wrong with that?)
e) Are we talking about labor work only from an engineers perspective? I think this is an open forum where people of all designations come in to share their experiences. From my perspective, labor work doesnt need to steam out of dissatisfaction that BTW does arise from canadian work environment. It can be turned into a higher paying job (if u have what it takes)

No hard feelings...Just contradicting ur thoughts here...:)

Guys, there is no big deal working as labour jobs in canada. Though they are very hard . But if you can work after some time ( say 6 months), they hire you permananely. they pay you around 14 dollars/hr. Assuming both Husband & wife working +++ some overtime where you get 1-1/2 time, you get take home salary of 4-5k per month. engineers can;t get so much in canada. i know many families who are very happy doing labor jobs & well setteled earning 5 k per month. ( they were GM level officer in India).
Hope this will clarify things.

Precisely my point.

I know lots of people like these. Labor jobs CAN get u a lot of money and dignity. And once you have seniority, you dont have to work just as hard. Only problem is that ur designation might not be in order.

Hey Hey Hey,This doesnt mean that Engineers dont make as much. The salary scale to my knowlege can slide anywhere between 35K-160K/yr...and if u can navigate this ladder (depending on ur capability), u can jump to higher salary bands and sky is the limit.

I dont want to start comparing the benefits and advantages/disadvantages of labor/elite jobs. Thats a whole other topic and we will stray away from the intent of this thread (to clarify what labor work really is)

Bottom line, In both cases, it depends on an individuals language skills, his attitude, his leadership skills, his capability and willingness to improve, and his persistent efforts along with continuing education.

So guys, Dont just give up as of yet. There is hope... lots of it.... The moment u loose ur self esteem and confidence...and stop dreaming, u have lost it....

I am not trying to show CARROT here. Its a reality and only those who dare to dream can achieve their dreams...
Sure everyone is not succesfull, and we will see examples of those who fail (on a sadder note, tones of them), but thats not the point. U need an attitude. A positive one...

It aint easy....The moment u stop dreaming, and stop believing in urself...u have lost it all. Its hard....but if ur persistent, ur efforts will pay off...

There are lot of job available for ladies also in General Labor field like packaging, sorting & light assembly etc. All companies hire ladies in all department, canadian workplace is cleaner & more safer for ladies to work. Just keep you mind open & do,nt let your old habits/thought override you. there is plenty of work in factories & also it is safest if you are permanent you get medical benefits etc. + job is also almost secure.
So cheers up & do,nt be afraid of labor job. Atleast you will become financial independent much quicker.
