i think manasvis comment is correct in terms of Australia not being too saturated.
But reading other papers indicates that the govt does a real good job of selection and integration into the labor force. The new migrants have far fewer hurdles and the employment possibilities are higher. I am not talking about hourly positions here.
That plus the weather and beaches makes it attractive for new folks compared to Canada.
I know a couple personally through one of my friends. They are his close relatives. They migrated to Canada in late 2002, came from Sydney, Australia. Both got jobs in mid 2003, husband got a job with Rogers Communications (@ $15.50 / hr) and wife with a bank as customer service rep in the call centre (around $13.50 /hr) but they went back to Australia in early 2004, permanently.
I asked them the reason for going back and their simple reply was: Its better in Australia. The guy told me that he was working with a telecom company in Sydney in Marketing and was getting at least 'two times' better than what he can expect here in Canada even after working for Rogers for about 3-4 years. His wife was also working with the same company in their HR department and was drawing a very good salary. As far quality of life, they thought that Sydney, Australia was better than Toronto,Canada. Weather is another plus point.
Guess what? Now my friend and his family are going to Australia for good. They have already put their house for sale and planning to move by mid 2005.
My 2 cents

the other supposed advantage that its easier to get into US if you are in Canada is only geographically true. The TN is there but thats it. And its not even considered a dual intent visa so that people have to change to H1 anyway most of the time. So just being a citizen of Canada gives few rights except TN and geographic proximity.
I do know people who have obtained really soild marketing jobs in telecom as well in Sydney. A few months after migration.
Well friends my australian experience is as follows:-
Australia is a beautifull country but no way better than Canada.
The Indian population in australia is not even the half of what we get
in Canada.
The overall economy, job availibility and oppurtunities of growth
are more in canada. Cost of living is much lesser in canada.
I have seen many people taking "australian route" to canada but in some rare case you will find someone immigrating form canada to australia.

Deal With Reality or Reality Will Deal With You
As of now Australia is upbeat and speaks of better job prospects in any field .Even the odd job rates are higher than Canada . And Immigration to Aus is tougher. The weather is a plus factor .
Canada is more settled coz Immhigration has been a long time option and the country is based on Immigrants . So it will be more adaptable to a new Immigrant.
But as BL said 'Home is where the heart is '
Manasvi.
Manasvi is again on the mark. It is tougher to get into Australia. I have read some papers on how they have tackled new people and integration into the labor force. Way better than Canada with all its provincial licensing.
Yes there are fewer indians so thats what one is looking for then Canada is of course better.
If your heart is in india then one can compare Australia and Canada simply based on practical matters.
The key is to realize that its not anymore a gateway to the US than Australia except for the TN and a shorter flight
