See the wording of the article

"A bill was introduced in the Canadian parliament on Thursday to end discrimination against Indian and other non-white immigrants in old-age pension."

"The problem is that Canada has bilateral old-age pension agreements with largely white nations, but not with India and most other countries,"

Has any Canadian newspaper carried this story? If people are discriminated because of their skin colour, we have a huge human right case at our hand.

There are a number of countries in world with similar old-age pension arrangement and hence Canada might respect that arrangement. It just happens that those countries tend to have Caucasians in majority.

But IMO, this article tries to portray Canada as a racist country.

I don't believe the "discrimination" is based on skin color.
It is based simply on the fact that govt. of Canada and the govt. of another country has a pension reciprocation arrangement.
Like that between the Canadian pension system and the US Social Security system.
That is a result of these countries and their social welfare systems having evolved and developed together and parallely.
The fact that such countries are primarily "white" is a different matter.

It certainly can, and I expect that for this bill to go anywhere, that process will have to be initiated.

OAS site says wait time is 10 years residency.. no country specific limits have been listed.

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/isp/pub/oas/oas.shtml#one

This might be a case of CPP which is different from OAS.. for CPP u have to work in canada or get pension based on reciprocal agreements between countries.

Does india give pension to anyone.. we have no such plan.. so reciprocal agreements will be difficult to implement. This is the same case of lost social security in usa..

OAS does not promote people to work and earn their pension.. OAS is what immigrants try to take advantage of by bringing their parents...
I am glad the waiting time is 10 years.. and should stay that way..

One of my friends father worked for 10 years and is now getting same pension as another old man who did not work a single day in canada but lived here for 10 years..

My friends father gets CPP and is not eligible for OAS as the cpp amount is greater or equal to OAS...

How is this system fair...

Ruby is a idiot politician trying to play vote bank politics.. We should not support this bill..
