Hello
My firnd have a problem which he wanna solve soon. He was suing a rogers phone and he got a bill of 500$ and it got accumulates to a huge bill...he didnt pay it and left. He is an international student. He is in doubt wether it will affect him while he apply for PR or when he go bak to india and come bak, will it be a problem at the airport..pls help
Ethicaly it is not a correct practice. I don't feel airport or any of government agency will get involved for collecting Rogers outstanding payment. But you never know when it will come around.
I do not understand how can a bill of $500 if was disputable can become a huge out standing. Your friend must have used Rogers cell phone after having a dispute over $500 was unethical on his part. So your friend is at equal fault now and should pay off outstanding now. Only chance he has is to negotiate amout with rogers and close case once for all. I know lot of people are following this practice. Because of this practice new immigrants are not getting credit card at arrival which was not the case couple of years back. Soon they will realise it and stop giving cell phones to international students and new immigrants. Which will be a big problem and frustating for a genuine person.
Your friend should ask himself instead of asking an expert for the unethical practice. I don't think Masoodji s going to advice your friend not to pay Rogers bill. You should be ashamed to ask this on a forum where expert is providing volunteer service.

Charlie, well said. Totally agree with you. It's unethical.
Scorps as such the govt. immigration etc. is not going to do anything in his immigration. What will happen is Roger's will send the outstanding to a collection agency. That will go on ur friends' credit history. When he comes back to Canada, the credit history will show the outstanding, and thus even before he lands in Canada he'll have a bad credit history. that means no credit cards, mortgages etc. Personally whether he is coming back or not, he can negotiate with Rogers and pay what he owes.

Sudesing, you r right about the New Sin. But it'll only be changed from the existing one to the new one. Most federal services don't work together, but this one does. His record is just being updated. For eg. if someone came here as a refugee, his SIN starts with a 9 number (I thk). Aftr he applied for PR or Citizenship, then his SIN get's updated to the ones given by diff. provinces. As such his record will always be there about the updation etc. Also for eg. when you apply for a credit card, specially in store etc. u don't have to give ur SIN number. he might if he is lucky escape in one case, but somewhere down the line, it will come up, because it takes 7 yrs for a record to be deleted.
First of all i would liek to thank everybody for replying. He is an international student, and he doesnt not have a sin number.SO how will it affect him.
Maybe it does not.
But the question is what kind of person he wants to become in life.
If he runs away from
-his responsibility
-facing problems directly
-owning up his dues
how does he plan to strike it big?
Petty savings will never help him reach bigger goals in life.
It is as basic as that.
Ultimately he will feel or become degraded and that is too big a price to pay for a few hundred dollars.
As suggested by others it might be a good idea to negotiate and pay up a fair amount.
But ultimately this is a question that he has to face.
No one else can have a "correct" answer for him.
