I've never tried DSL so can't say for sure. Have heard from friends about connectivity/bandwidth issues, but it may have something to do with the areas they live in.

All I can say is I've been using cable for the past 6/7 years and I'm a very satisfied customer, absolutely no complaints. Very few hiccups indeed.

I have used both services and find both to be o.k. Howevr, there is still some basic difference in these services and the speed and security these offer.

Security :

DSL is comparatively more secure than cable access as you are sharing the connection with other internet users in cable access but you do not share the same in telephone access. However, once you are on the internet then everybody is sharing information/access and can be prone to hacking/virus attack and one should use a good antivirus software and a fire wall.

Speed :

This also varies depending on the time of use and the number of persons sharing the internet connection in cable access at any given time. In DSL services the speed is dependent on your home/office distance with the telephone company's switching centre. The more distance (the actual telephone copper cable length underground) you have with the switching centre the less speed you would get.

Cost:

Both services are priced similar and could cost you from $29.95 to $44.95 (before taxes) for the home use. However, both services providers offer some promotion offers to new and returning subscirbers where they can give you a month or 2 free or 4-5 months services at half price. However, there are other resellers such as 3 web who would get you the same DSL service (they buy from Bell in wholesale and resell to the consumer) at a cheaper price.

One more thing that there could be some extra charges in case of DSL is you download more stuff than they allow per month while the cable does not have this type of restriction.

I have used both DSL and Cable internet. I used the high speed version of both. I shifted from Cable to DSL, because Cable used to go off almost once every 2 weeks. With DSL I have never been offline even for a minute. .. I somehow trust DSL connection more than the cable.

Also Cable connection is not even close to what they advertise.. while with DSL you will get close to the max speed.

User opinions differ from each.. I had a max download problem with Cable.. and they also called and told me that i was using too much bandwidth and they will suspend my connection.. I never had this problem with DSL..

I have no experience with cable because I had no complaint with DSL (Sympatico). There is no limit on uploads and downloads.

Recently installed wireless home network. It is great.
