Three-year wait becoming intolerable Immigration woes put honeymoon on hold
For Mississauga couple Ahmed Javed and Shagoofa Wali, who were wed at City Hall in March of 2001, the honeymoon is on hold.
Almost three years and $4,000 later, they're still waiting for Javed to become a permanent resident so he can get a job and they can move out of her parents' basement. They say the situation is becoming unbearable and they can no longer afford to spend a small fortune on legal fees.
However, authorities say the couple are the authors of their own misfortune. Instead of applying for permanent residency status while outside of Canada, which is the usual procedure, Javed applied after coming to Canada.
At any rate, the couple remains frustrated.
