Sidenote : What did you reply and was it correct in your high school exam. I also note that in India, my above statements would make perfect sense. In Canada, they follow a different way of English usage.
Rice and curry can be 2 dishes or 1 dish and that is why i made 2 statements, each assuming the 2 diff. senarios. in TN, Rice will come with curry and hence Rice and Curry is actually 1 dish just like the fish and chips of Canada. to eleborate :
You say "Fish and chips is a good dish "and not" Fish and chips are good dishes"

But as said, Please donot ask me what grammar rule i used. I honestly donot know. I am pointing out the mistake as a result of my knowledge gained by reading a lot of books/ newspapers during my childhood. I also assume that "are" is to be used when the result is plural. Since the result is singular "is" is used.

"Rice and Curry MAKE a good dish"
or
Curried Rice is a good dish.
using "and" implies plural so you would use "are" (in most cases)
