I know of all sardars having english names like sunny, bunty etc.

You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
Changing your name makes sense if you are in a field like marketing, sales or consulting where you want clients to remember your name.....also sometimes clients are embarrassed to say your name because they cannot pronounce it and this affects the dynamic. So giving yourself an English name is a marketing or branding strategy in that sense.
Ultimately if you are good at what you do people will beat a path to your door but the name change may help the process and hasten it.

Before 6 months, when I used to call the ICICI bank call center in Bangalore, there were people with name Jack, Paul, Maria, Jemey, Tom, Molly, Gary, Denise etc etc..... It was really funny for everybody (including their white clients) especially when you know that they are in India & that wasn't their real names.
But now when people like me started laughing at their faces by asking questions about their real names, they have stopped doing that & now I think they give their real name or a shorten one.
I think its good enough to shorten your real name so that its easy for other people to catch up quickly, instead of giving yourself a english name & sound even more funny. Name should be such that it should make the opposite person feel convenient to communicate effectively.

well I dont have scientific data or a study to support my conclusion however It is just from having lived here and seeing this. Also: when you see a desi person whose real name is something like "surinder singh" and he/she calls themself "Sandy". It looks silly. It looks like they are trying to be something they are not.
Be proud of your name/culture/heritage etc.
I knew of someone whose name was Jaganathan V. Poolangudi which he creatively changed it to Jack V.Poola.
And then there is always the risk of Babu being called Baboon and Vinay as One Eye as it happened to the two guys in my last place of work.
