Home Depot and other hardware stores sell stud locators for less than $20. They simply locate any ferrous material and beep. Studs have nails and screws and hence can be located by locating screws and nails.

I would say nothing is cheap or expensive what you pay what you get. I would not save money on the wall mount where I am going to hang the plasma/LCD TV worth $ 4000.00.

What price you are being quoted which seems outrageously high?
Anywhere between 200-300 just for the mount is reasonable. However, you have to be very careful for installation since it will require installing only on studs, not anywhere on the wall.
