hi cd members
thursday afternoon my son came back from school complaining
of high fever cough and running nose , fever touched high of 104 by friday
ran to sick kids , waited for 12 hours and they did tests, did not give any
sort of medication except tylenol and sent us home , went again to family doc
and she gave antibiotic , now the question here is the fever is not coming down
and the docs seem to say this is very normal ??? the antibiotics are taking
forever to work, as a parent one worries, is this the health system i was
looking forward to in canada ???daily visits to the family doc and three visits to
the best hospital in the world and my son is still suffering , doc says cannot fly
to india in such condition , am at a loss what to do ! anyone with similar experience
do tell us what to do ??? my son is suffering terribly.

Doctors here do not give antibiotics easily. I donot necessarily agree with this but that's the fact. I am not a fan of this countries great health care system.
I had a similar experience, but my daughter had low grade fever not high, which took nearly 10 days to go
Make sure you give the right dosage at the right time, sometime immediately after between 4 to 6 hrs, consistently. If there is infections you have to go to the doctor again for antibiotics.
My friend's 1 year daughter got sick last week and they took him to the Doctor.
Doctor said that it will take 15 days for the child to be back to normal.
Also, he mentioned that till the child is eating and drinking fluid (lot of it), they should not be worried excessively .
Just a FYI...my son goes to a pediatrician in Michigan. All my experiences I posted in the earlier post is based of that doc and hospital. So, it's not just Canada, but maybe in US too, fever treatments are not based on antibiotics.
Over time, there has been several postings critical of Canadian healthcare. Here is my experience. My son had poop stuck in the upper bowel causing him pain. Since he was crying his life out, we took him to emergency at the Windsor Regional Hospital, since driving to his Michigan hospital was too time consuming.
Within 5 to 10 minutes of walking in, we were given an room and a bed and a doctor appeared within 30 min. Treatment was professional, efficient, timely and successful. Of course, we had to wait the next 6 hrs since they had to run several other tests and the test results took time. But at least, my son was back to normal within an hour at the most.

hi,It is natural to worry as parennts...
give paracetamol as recommended.
lots of fluid to drink water/soup preferably chicken soup
wet sponging if required when ever temp is too high.
just keep the temp down and as the childs body is able to fight back you will see improvement.
antibiotics in viral fever is of no use and it is a good policy not to overprescribe medicines ..for eg i know in one island the most basic amoxycillin is still very effective and in India as higher antibiotics are prescribed amoxycillin is not of much use now
so do not worry about antibiotics doctor will prescribe only if needed.
