Don't forget the age factor. If he is close to retirement AND he has a good pension plan OR if he has health issues it makes a lot of sense to stay here. If he is under 50 he is better off taking the risk and going to Dubai alone leaving his family behind here. Dubai is a frickin expensive place to lead a decent family life. His salary alone would not support the family well over there AND leave enough money to make the move worthwhile.

Thanks for your responses so far..

I am kind of surprised by swarup_canada's post. Is'nt AED 25K enough for a small family to survive and save in UAE? In terms of age, he is around 36 (I guess, not quite sure)

Hey Guys

I am from Abu Dhabi and is all set to move to Canada in June 07 again.

He should not take the offer for the following reasons:

Dubai accomodation is expensive, for 1BHK he will have to spend above Dhs 70K per annum.

He will spend hours in travelling to office, traffic jams are daily affair.

If his work place is on the Sheik Zayad Road he will pay Dhs 4 toll tax for every entry

He wont find good canadian schools for the kids

He will roam in the streets for hours to find a parking that too a paid one.

Kids will be exposed to appartment atmosphere inhailing poluted air unlike canada.

Dhs 25K per month is not a very good salary for a person who is already making 90K CAD.

He will be spending good amount on education unlike in canada

He will have to send kids out of UAE after plus 2 class.

As a person who was in the middle east, I would advise him to take it.
In the UAE, there are a lot of multi national company but not much clever people to run it. so you can swell up in ranks. It is very easy to climb up the ladder. Besides, jobs in the UAE is like a govt. job. They will not chase you unless you run away. AED 25K a month, tax free is very very good salary. He can expect to save around 20K a month(assuming free housing and that his kids donot go to school). He should negotiate with his employer to pay his apartment rent, school fees for his chidren , a free car with driver, provide a house maid and for free medical. Also for his position he should have one month of paid airfare provided (to cananda) vacation for 5 months of work. He can take the excess money from the airfare and travel to India.
In Canada, for a 90K salary, he canot save much (with his wife not working).
Dubai / UAE is really a great cosmopolitan place to be. He would enjoy it there , apart from living a very good life.
The only problem that i see is that if he opts to return to Canada after 4 or 5 years of work. The Canadians give a damn about his middle east experience (even with a MNC) and he may have to start from scratch or from a very low rung position.
Hope this helped.

Sidenote : Just two incidents.
1. There ia a very big Architectural company in the GTA known as HOK. Me and many of very clever and experienced architects tried to apply for this firm with the firm not even responding to the cleverest of the clever desi. But the same firm in Dubai recruited a Desi from India (who has no Architect experience - he was a lecturer in a self financing collge) for around USD 5000 a month with one month paid vacation and airfare to India. He told me that there was no much work and that he was enjoying in Dubai. He was also given free cellphone from the company.
2. There are some very big miltinational companies in Dubai/ Gulf. They recruit professionals who donot know anything and they teach them everything. You are taught by the best of the best gora's. You only have to learn and once you learn, you can climb up the ladder very fast. This is the reason why many desi's are in the gulf for 20, 30 years. Only a person who was in the middle east/ SE Asia knows this. For Cdn. citizens, it is very easy to change jobs / come back to Canada - b'cos of you passport- if you donot like the place or get a better job.

While he is at it ...... he can ask for the sun & the moon..... he has mentioned that the consolidated salary is 25 k .... so after rentals, kids education , car , health insurance etc what is left ?

Regarding HOK .... i know atleast half a dozen people who work for HOK from India.... though most of them are in US. The office here in Canada handles Dubai projects ... as a matter of fact all projects in middle east.... while their London office handles projects in India. In fact an Indian origin guy is looking after the Interior projects in middle east.

Incidently your friend is earning 4000 CAD & not 5000 ... as per your last post. (DH 144,000 remember) works out to CAD 4000 PM). If you are sent from Toronto office you would be getting atleast CAD 6000.

TK presently HOK is recruiting. If you know Architectural desktop ... you can apply .... just give it a shot ... think it should work
