Hello

This is a dilemma of a friend of mine. He is a finance manager with a US company in Mississauga and makes around 90K annually. He recently received an offer for a position as a financial controller in dubai, which pays him around 25K AED per month (all inclusive) and he is confused.

He has been in Canada for around 7 years now and is doing really well now. My advice to him to stay in Canada as he is well off in canada in terms of career and job. But, to him, it is an opportunity to be secure financially and be closer to India.

What do you guys think? I know that it is his decision and there are alot of personal factors involved. But, I think this forum has people who saw both sides of the world and can provide better insight. He is married, have two small kids with wife being a home maker.

Any thoughts would be greately appreciated

I dont think that there is THE right way to go. Right for one may be way wrong for another and that is because perspectives differ. The classic Harvard case study of an image of an old woman that also looks like an image of a young lass..says it all.

It all boils down to what ranks high on the priority list..if your friend (btw I think you are an awesome friend to have since you are looking at ways to help him in his decision making)..ok back to where I was..if your friend's priority is being closer to his original home but yet away from the inherent problems that India faces then he would think getting a job in dubai would be an ideal WIN / WIN. However if he thinks that he simply loves Canada and his regular activities here then no matter what the financial security he may be offered in Dubai, he would want to remain here.

I would opt for Dubai because it falls in line with my priorities of weather, closeness to India, good infrastructure, a good standard of living and financial security in a random order.

All the best in whatever path your friend and his family ends up taking; after all life has many journeys to trudge upon and may each bring its own flavour and meaning!!

He should take it. The world is becoming a global village so any foreign exposure is good for him.

Thanks bombamma and loser for your responses.

Well..in fact, my suggestion for him was to stay put in Canada. The reason being that he has a good job and a career in front of him here. He can be financially secure here as well with the amount of money he is making and I dont think that he is going to end up extra-great financially, if he moves dubai. Again, he can easily expect to be in the 100+ category in the next couple of years, if he stays in his current job.

Of course, the fact that he is closer to India is an added advantage for being in Dubai. But, considering the education/kids/visa factor, I think Canada is better for him.

Again this is my opinion.

I would like to get some thoughts on the folks who are currently in dubai or who lived there.

Thanks again

T

There is a very interesting discussion going on here about Dubai http://www.canadiandesi.ca/read.php?TID=16824 but surprisingly no one living/lived in Dubai from that thread has replied to your question.

From Dubai and India, Canada looks green; from Canada, Dubai and India looks green and so on. I do not know where it all ends!

I wonder why no1 has suggested the impact of this assignment in the person's career 10 years hence . Beyond the money aspect , it is subjective to the job description and the challenge and value addition that this posting may get .

I have known GC holders accepting assignments abroad for both money and progress. If the company is good and the job also I dont see anything negative.

To top it all , you will get 1 month prepaid leave for your friend and his family incl air tickets ~ what more can 1 ask for ?

In my opinion overseas appointments should be taken up when you are getting atleast 1.5 times your present salary .... if not twice. In this case financially it is not a great move. Because you have to consider the major expenses .... rent, childrens education & health care . If you calculate these three, it pretty much negates the effect of taxes here in Canada.
On the flip side ...... Dubai is a better version on India. You are surrounded by people who look like you & sound like you. During my stay in Dubai i used to speak Hindi all the time ..... even the arabs spoke hindi. I went for my driving test & the Arab guy was talking to me in hindi while i spoke to him in english. The place is very lively and bright.
