Dear Chandresh,

Whatever I wrote, I wrote with my personal experience......I have'nt cooked up anything on my own.If you have disagreement on any point I can understand but if the idea is just to oppose everything....then I can't say anything.

1.If you have renewed your contract 3 times....its very good for you.But we are regreting. Now after spending some time in the country I know which company and plan is good for me (even if I have to go for a contract I know what are the things to keep in mind). But my suggestion of NOT signing the contract is to newcomers for initial 1-2months.Once they understand the systems then they can go for it anytime.
Not only me, I have come across so many people who just sign contract in haste when they come and regret later.

2.Again, if you were not asked to produce rental insurance .. its very good for you.But we were asked. We were staying in hotel for 1st few days and once we chose this apartment we requested them if we can move in the same day but we were not allowed till we got insurance. And the information is for those who are asked for it.BTW, Rental insurance is to cover the tenant from theft, fire etc.

3.It is obvious that different companies have different policies.I just gave an example of bell from my experience and if anyone reading this post who is in trial period of 3 months can benefit with this info....what is the harm?

4.I don't know which all banks gives locker facility. As I said TD gives.Even I was not aware untill someone told me.Bank never told us.When I asked they gave us.That's the reason I was sharing this info as not many people know about this.

And about not listening to negative people.........everyone has own thinking.I respect your thinking. But at the same time I feel when someone has spent time, money, efforts to immigrate...then he/she should face the initial struggling period very positively. There are more people to spread negative thoughts than positive. With time and experience the person will know if this country is a right place for him or not.But i have met couple of people who got disheartened listening to others and are thinking of packing their bags to go back!

Few mistakes that we made as we were unaware.....I would like to share for the benefit of new immigrants and it will be good idea if other CD's can also put together some TIPS.Small little things also matter when you are new.

1.Do Not sign any long term contract with mobile,home-phone,internet companies.Go for 'pay as u go' system. With time you will know which company and what package suits you the best!(Our 1st phone bill was $300 :cuss:)

2.To get an apartment you need to take rental insurance.(I don't know all apartments need that or not).Banks like TD will take all the info and say they will mail a form which you have to fill up and mail back to them. The process takes about 7days.If you need insurance same day...RBC gives that.

TIP:You get discounted insurance quotes on Home/Auto/Life if you keep same company for all of these.

3.When you sign up for phone/internet etc make sure to check all the policies of the company. For example, you get 1st 3 months free internet from Bell.Subscribe for highest speed as its free BUT if u think ur usage is not much and would like to go for lower package let them know b4 end of 3 months otherwise u r charged Fees for downgrading ur package.

4.If you have checking account in bank, u r eligible for free safety deposit(locker)...(as least TD gives)....but availability is a problem.Even if you have to pay initially you get priorty in waiting list.

Most importantly be DEAF EARS to people who give you negative feedback about Canada.Since you have put lot of time, money and efforts to come here.....don't get disheartned listening to negative comments.Be positive and work hard initially...it will pay off later!

:)

No big deal about signing contract if one does proper research. After doing research and discussion with various service providers, We signed the contract with Rogers within week after arrival and renewed couple of times and have no regrets.

Household insurance cost just few dollars a month and is just a call away no need to go anywhere.

It is individual duty before signing contract to read everything in totality.

No big deal as Other banks are also charging very nominal amount just few dollars a month and benefit of free deposit from TD gets nullified if one needs to maintain balance in checking account to be eligible for free safe deposit service.

To avoid regreting later, listening to other experiences is always better. Some people learn from other expetiences and some learm from own experiences. Smart people are those who learn from .........

Global forecast becomes bleaker as Canada enters recession

After acknowledging for the first time that Canada is entering a recession, the Bank of Canada cut its key interest rate on Tuesday by three-quarters of a percentage point, to 1.5 percent, a 50-year low.
A sharp drop in exports to the United States, particularly of automobiles and auto parts, combined with a collapse in energy and commodity prices has brought an end to the country’s isolation.

On Tuesday, The Globe and Mail, a Toronto newspaper, reported that Chrysler was threatening to shut two assembly plants in Ontario, which employ about 8,000, if it did not receive 1.6 billion Canadian dollars ($1.26 billion) in aid.

Cool Girl,
I agree with Chandresh on this one. One needs to know both sides of the coin. It is a reality ( I know this after 6 years in Canada) that jobs are easy to find in Canada are : IT, Finance, Labour jobs, Mechanical Engg. jobs. Most of the others jobs are very hard to find and it is reality. So , say for example, that you are a Civil engineer with 15 years solid international experience, it is fair to assume that you will NEVER get a decent job in Canada unless you upgrade your education, Volunteer your experience and so on... So you can be all the positive that you want but you will end up nowhere and then after 3- 6 months of spending your life savings, reality will kick in and you will wish that you never immigrated. It also depends on subjective factors. For example, a person who was earning Rs. 10,000 a month in India and living hand to mouth in India, with 4 children and a non english speaking wife may find paradise in Canada , though he might end up doing labour jobs (both he and his wife) while his children receive Universal child care benefit from Stephen Harper , be educated free in schools etc... OTOH, a very talented Sociology professor from Delhi with crores of property and a very safe Govt. job in a university might find Canada to be Hell when he ends up here and universities rejecting him b'cos of his profession and race. Though the professor might have come to Canada seeking clean air, un corroupt politicians, paved roads, Milk and honey in super markets, a un crowded transits system etc... he is likely to hate Canada for the failure to give him jobs.
That is why I accept Chandresh's view that you need to hear both sides of the coin to decide which one is better. Unfortunately, we donot have a standard set of regulations to forewarn potential immigrants about the dangers that they can face upon immigration and most of them in the happiness of immigrating choose to reject all the reality. These people learn by experience (myself included).
Hope this helps.

Peace by TK

The idea is not to oppose.......I do not understand who gave you this thinking.
What I wrote is from my personal experience and based on experiences of friends that I have and made during last 8 years.

Hi all,

I have been in and out of Canada since last 2 years. In a way I have lived in about 4 different cities from east to west and now finally I have entered vancouver. I have spent abt 2 months here and the weather and surroundings are great. However I felt bad as I couldnot find any job in my field. Plus then I tried for call centers, customer support and even odd jobs but people dont simply reply. This make me wonder whether my Indian origin is coming in way and employers getting hesistant or any other reason. With 15 years of marketing and global trading expereince it beomes a embarrassing situation as I am with family and kids. Though I have enough money to support for years withut jobs, but this is not why we came here to spend our savings into Canada. I have spent lot of money here and earned nothing. This scenerio makes me womder if this was a wrong decicion. The bad thing about here is high rents, too much licensing in everything, general bad perception about hiring Indians(God knows what's the history for this) and very few opportunities in traditional proffessions. I can only hope that recession doesnot take its impact here or else it will be worse. For me its easy to just bags bags and go back and start earning in India more than here, but India has become soft target for terrorists, and its no longer safe to bring-up kids.

It a dilemma of what to do and where to go. I wish Govt of Canada had some program where we could get temporary jobs to boost our confidence at least.
