I think it was an instinctive reaction on the op's part to diffuse the situation .

.. Always analyze the situation first and then take a reactive approach .

We don't react in the same manner always and let this incident pass . You know what to do next time :) ...

I recall I was in the library once and this black female was taking on the cell ... When I showed my discomfort she asked me to change my seat .... I did not react but after 3 mins approached the librarian and asked ... what are we supposed to do if someone is talking loudly - She responded 'Don't talk to them directly but inform us ' ...... ' Thats what I m doing' I said and pointed her to the lady ......... The librarian walked to the lady and asked her to shut her cell .

The Chinese lady and for that reason no person has a right to touch another excepion being kids ..... she could have been in trouble had you accosted her ... but thats ok ....... don't die over this ... move on ....... At least you weren't the one who banged someone else's child .

Be good but don't over do it !

You make a good point as to how one reacts under different circumstances. But in situations such as these, personally, I have always believed parental instincts get the better of you and that is to defend your child first...not "diffuse the situation" by apologizing for your child who's fault it may not have been and who has taken abuse from a stranger and is looking for some protection.

But I am still with you on this...we have the benefit of sitting here and thinking about it but never know how we ourselves would have reacted at that exact moment.

Call 9-1-1.

If it had happened in someone's residence they need to have Insurance to cover for damages.

I would have made a complaint against the Chinese woman, filed for damages both physical and mental harassment.

This is the only way we will learn and teach others.

NOBODY !, (REPEAT) NOBODY! has the right to put a finger on me or anybody else.

A verbal confrontation is different than a physical assault.

Next time call 9-1-1 file a complaint, find a good attorney and file a claim.

It might $1 or $1Million it is worth the fight.

I know some of you are laughing at my response, but remember that we are in Canada and we should do the Whites way.

No soft options or apologies.

By walking away you are reinforcing your kids mind that it is okay to be picked upon and you should walk away.

Hell NO!, you should stand up and fight BUT VERBALLY. If you do not teach your kid to stand up for his/her right now, how is the kid going to defend its rights later in life.

DO NOT BUCKLE UP!. FIGHT but Verbally!.

In one case what would have happened if the person who scratched the kids nose was HIV +ve.

Please do not take it easy or saab chalta hai.

I agree with Vandematram.

I was surprise it happen here. No one can hit anyone regardless, if you need to protect understand.

Just think, if that happen to white lady, chiness lady will afraid to hit.....
She knows us... is that right?

And most important: Talk to you daughter.
Try to explain why this happened and how to avoid such thing in future. (May be that lady just had a bad day.)
Talk to your daughter. Not all individuals are alike. Some are polite. some are rude. some might look polite. Some might look rude. Some might not be like what they look like.

Calling 9-1-1, verbally yelling, fighting for your rights ... it's all okay. You might win a medal. The person in front of you might go to jail.

But most important is:
Talk to your kids.

You were there when this happened. So you know. But the ultimate thing would be to make your daughter strong enough to avoid (first, avoid) this situation and next, take control of such situation with patience even when she is alone.

MKG's words are still true even today.

Well, very easy to write, but difficult (I am not saying its impossible) to implement though. Most probably you would have done the same thing, if you were in the same situation :(
But next time this kind of a thing happens, I have promised myself I am going in with all my guns blazing, and maybe ending off with "Make my day" Clint Eastwood special!!!!!!!!!!!!
