Hello

I just wanted to share my experience and also wanted to find out if anyone else encountered the same thing.

I am Canadian Citizen and I went to India in february 2009 first time after becoming citizen. When I reached Bombay the immigration autority called me in their office since I still had my Indian Passport with me. They took atleast half an hour deciding what to do with me and my family's passport. Finally they took it away saying that I am no longer Indian Citizen and gave me a receipt that I did have Indian Passport and now it is no longer valid.

The only thing I did not understand is why did they took so long time to decide what to do? One authority asked another and kept on going...

How they come to know that you have Indian Passport?
Did you use Indian Passport to travel?
When you became Canadian, your Indian Passport was not cancelled?
Just, curious to know!

When you go through the immigration check the officer asked me to show my canadian documents and Indian documetns if any. Since I had Indian passport with me I showed them both the documents.

When I applied for Canadian citizen card/passport, I did not submit my Indian Passport (I wasn't asked for it either). So, the passport was never cancelled.

Passport must/should have been cancelled when you apply for Indian Visa ... That;s what I have understood.

Once cancelled, you don't need to carry it. I know people have stories to tell - but technically you don't need to carry - we didnot.

They were confused & didn't know what to do because you had Indian Passport - which probably was not cancelled by authorities here in Canada. Actually you should thank authorities to figure it out in 30 min.
