Hello Cd's,
My Check Engine light is coming on for the past 3 weeks in my Mazda Protege 2000 car.
I went to a local mechanic outside the GTA and he told me that it takes $ 90 to scan the car.
Is there anyone who scans but then waives the charges of scanning once I give it for repair in the same shop (like cdn. tire).
Your inputs appriciated.
Peace by TK

TK ,
I had the same problem in my Protege ... Please search for 'engine light' or 'maf' under my id for the relevant thread . http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=16177&page=2
I visited Peel Auto Center (Brampton -Clarence Kennedy) who charged $50/- for scanning ....... cleaned the MAF sensor though the code was prob for an O2 sensor / EGR valve and also said if the cleaning doesn't work he would replace the MAF sensor .. and not charge me for that . It worked .
There are 2 kinds of scanners.. a general one and a more specialized one . Its better to get it scanned on the more specialized one , though it costs more ....
Somebody can easily fleece on the engine light and its important that a correct diagnosis is made . I recomend Peel Auto Center 905 453 9432.

I had my check engine light ON last summer & took it to my local mechanic.
Without any diagnosis he told me I need to replace the bottom oxygen sensor. There are two oxygen sensor in the engine, one of the top & one on the bottom. But the bottom one has more chances of going bad as all the dirt & bumps effects its life more than the one on the top.
We changed it & after changing he connected some electronic device to my car & inserted some code to turn off the light. He told me straight forward that the light would definitely come up again after one day but keep on driving for 2 weeks & it would go off permanently. And the same thing happened.
After coming up again I kept on driving for 2-3 weeks & one day when I was driving above on 120 KMPH on highway 407, it went off. Never seen it again. Charged me $220 (cash) altogether........
But unfortunately he sold his garage to some other guy in fall & I don't have much experience of the new guy yet..... The garage is on Kipling & Albion intersection beside used car dealer if you want to try.

Thanks Folks ..
Based on your experience/s I guess I will stick on to Peel Auto Center ... Last time he had charged me 50/- , scanned and cleaned the MAF ... Will see what he has to do for tomorrow .

Can you not go to parts source, for scanning, its absolutely free there, but not like a mechanic. Any it may be the EGR/ or Catalatic Converter or O2 sensor.
You get scanners for $30.
After scanning clear the code.
