Dear Forum Members
Hope all of you are enjoying this warm weekend! We are planning a big step in our lives(it might not be really big/huge for some people)Anyways
we are planning to buy a 2003 VW getta from a private sale(6800$).Mileage is 150k Car seems to be in good shape leaving a few scratches at the rear end(owner says while parking in a narrow place he got those scartches, how much does it cost to get the scartches repaired?)he got new tires(from candian tire) in sep 2008,seats are good,ac is fine, automatic transmission, floor mats, battery changed in 2008.We have booked an appointment for car inspection with vw dealer(which is costing me 108$)
I have gone thru many of the threads picked up all imp information about emission test, uvip etc etc.I am a bit panicking to invest such big amt(which i never did)are there any other points which i have to consider?Once inspection is succesfull i am planning to get car proof certificate too...i m going to open another thread for this as i need some help in this regard....
Folks pls put in your valuable suggestions!
cheers
prince

With 150 K on the odometer whatever you pay you are still buying a lemon. You should look for Toyota Corolla as it less expensive to maintain and parts cheaper.
Are you looking at diesel engine or gasoline engine? If it’s 1.9 Diesel, don’t even think about it. It’s known for lots of engine problem. I guess mk4 (gasoline) is bit more reliable but still has some electrical issues. Don’t forget it’s a German car so reliability is a bit sketchy, and maintenance/parts could be expensive too. Also mileage seems a bit high.
Buying a car is second big decision you make in your life, make sure you do lots n lots of research for any particular model you are looking for.
Good luck with your search.

If one searches patiently , one can find a low mileage used Japanese vehicle around the same age in the same price range ..... 50K - 60K kms should be ideal ....
I would have preferred a Toyota Corolla , Nissan Sentra or a Mazda in stead as Japanese cars need lesser maintenance in later years .....

Guys ! if u wanna buy used car ...
Please go threw this link : http://www.repodepo.ca/
its an public auction , mostly cop seized, bank possessed car...
just register with your e-mail and u will get access... u will be able to see the car pictures and going market value... at least it give us idea about market.
then u can go and bid on it after checking the vehicle about 40% less then market value..
no fees to go there ...so worth trying.
U HAVE ALSO CHANCE TO INSPECT THE CAR AFTER U WIN THE BID - IF U FIND MAJOR PROBLEM U DONT HAVE TO BUY
i am assuming its government funded auction but i am not sure.
