Dear Friends,

My wife who is migrating from India is a Homeopathic Doctor. What is the scope of the career in Canada. What exams does she have to do?

Does she have to start her own practise or can she get a job?

Thank you for your advice

Rakesh

There is no legal doctorate or university degree programs for practicing homeopathy in Canada. All regulatory bodies only recognize allopathy as the "true" medical practice. There are many private colleges who have diploma programs for those who want to become practicing homeopaths

The Government of Ontario has passed an act in 2007 regulating the practice of Homeopathy (although they are still not recognised as "doctors" )

See this for more details

As far as I know Homeopathy treatment is not covered by OHIP. I visited a doctor here once. She was Romanian and out of the one hour I was with her (she had to take my history etc), she spent most of her time lamenting on how difficult it was for Homeopathic doctors here in the western world. That was one point of view.

One other time I was with my former family physician, I mentioned I ONLY take Homeopathic medicine because they don't have any side-effects. The guy went mental on me for saying that and lectured me on all the emergency cases he had to deal with because of Homeopathy. That is another point of view.

In both cases, from my experience, it appears, Homeopathy is not fully embraced here. There still is some stigma.

However, you can get homeopathic medicines in many places here including Loblaws.

There probably is a very small section of the society that "doesn't mind trying it". But if one had a problem, a Homeopathic doctor is not the first person that comes to his/her mind I would think.

It is "scientifically" not possible (at least until now) to explain the effects of homeopathic medicine because the substances used are too diluted and close to water to see any active ingredient. It is one of the reasons why western world does not recognize homeopathy.

Even with allopathic medicine, our beliefs and conviction play a major role in healing.

Not taking a shot at you personally, but I think that is a load of BS. Medicines work or don't. Else we'd all get by taking some placebos and conviction.

With all due respect to homeopathy, homeopathy is placebo as far today's science and scientific principles are concerned. You cannot scientifically explain how something diluted in water to 10 power 60 can cure. One part per billion is 10 power 12.

That is why pharamaceutical companies test their drugs vis a vis placebo to see their effectiveness. In placebo group, there are a good number of people who get well by taking the placebo (they are told it is a medication).
