But that is what decides the rest. If you donot have a good job, then all the rest canot be enjoyed.
There are a lot of barriers for immigrants to get employed (except IT and a small no of other professions).
How can you take a vacation, enjoy the life, go to bars, outings etc... when you canot get a job. And Canada is one of the worst places in the developed world to get a job.
It is better if you are a low skilled person (unable to speak English here). In India you will get Rs 2000-Rs 5000 a month. Here you get $ 10.25 an hour at MacDonalds, Grocery stores etc...
Having said that, we absolutely need you and your family here. We need you to pay taxes, pay rent, pay for healthcare, pay for your flight ticket, pay for moretgage, gas , insurance, groceries etc.. The more people (aka immigrants) come the better for us.
As Tully said in his previous post, whatever people say negetively will only induce positiveness in future immigrants and people will come in droves to Canada. Thus we (well settled immigrants) can do business and enhance our lives. Just as an example, I am in a study (conducted by a university) on the endless no of immigarnts that come here and their settlement problems. I get paid $ 35 for one session (one hour). So who will devise such studies if no immigrants come. That is why I am always so negetive. I want to bring as many immigrants to Canada as possible to enjoy life here and spends lot of money. The Canadian govt. has recently started a pilot project to give a nice and fitting reply to anyone who is speaking negetively of the Govt's policies (incl. immigration).
Please come here. With your enthusiasm, it will be vey easy to find a job (though you may not be in IT). We are welcoming you with open arms and a cheerful spirit. Also please make no note of the recent recession which has closed so many positions and also of the numerous positions that have gone overseas. The only sufferers of those are the local native born people (as published in redflagdeals).

Peace by TK

Just curious - did you live in all these countries as an immigrant, or did you first get a job as an expatriate and then started living there (and perhaps became a permanent resident)

Thanks to all those who have added their opinions.

First of all, this is not a Canada-Bashing or Canada-defending post.

This is my sincere and honest effort to understand the WHY.......

All first world countries need constant new immigrants. Everywhere there are issues such as racism, second class citizens etc.......

But then there is differentiation in your own country back home........which is of the worst kind.......Maharashtra being one such case......

In Mumbai, there are community based schools and colleges, which give preference to people from particular communities.......

Lets take a hypothetical example, where, in India, SriLankans or Bangladeshis or Nepalis start getting the good high paid jobs. What do u think will happen? What will be the reaction?

Sonia Gandhi is an example of - outsider always being an outsider.

However, her son/daughter is openly accepted.

What is wrong if u take care of your own people? Would u not do it?

Now the question then is........if they want to take care of their own people, why call us.....to do their menial work? then why insist on skilled workers?

This is the only question I am unable to answer.......

From what I understand, Canadians are people who help their community......go out of their way.....they are a country strong on human rights etc........then why this paradox???????????

I really do not mean to offend anyone or belittle what anyone has gone through.... My apologies to one and all..

I was in US(NYC) just the last week after a long gap. It was an entirely different universe from Toronto.

What economic downturn? Even in their worst of times the place seemed more upbeat than Toronto!

Jobswise Canada as good or bad as EU/Oz. Maybe even better despite all the grumbling from the immigrant class.

That being said, you don't routinely get beaten up by punks in Canada. Oz and continental Europe are sh--h---s in comparison.

I think I am with TK's sarcasm here! :) I am a trained spectroscopist and became one the day I arrived here! Never thought of any problems that other immigrants faced; I certainly never had much to complain except my problems finding an exceptional white girl (don't ask, I am just a slave to cute white girls). Otherwise, Canada is as good as US or Europe or many other places I cruised before landing here. I guess once people fail to find work they like, it is pretty much downhill from there! I wish you great luck finding such employment.

Some occupations have licensing requirements that need to be met before they can be in their professions, which can be a long drawn process. In other cases, the requirement of "Canadian experience" frustrates immigrants. If no one gives you a chance, how are you ever going to gain "Canadian experience." In some cases, there is very low demand of the particular skill set, which they possess from back home even though they qualified in skilled worker category.
