That was me who PM'ed you, oops..I didn't realize I sent a PM until now. I had meant to reply to your post. I know you have previously indicated you don't want to sign-up with WIND. Since most of your usage will be within the GTA, you should not have problems on WIND. The northern part of Brampton is a WIND AWAY zone, which means you'll pay roaming @ 20c / minute.

The latest deal that WIND has on it's Pay Your Way (Pay as you go) plan, is they're offering free unlimited incoming for life in a WIND zone. This deal expires Oct 31, 2011. Add-on unlimited WIND-to-WIND calling for $5 a month. So for $5 a month you get unlimited incoming call and text and unlimited WIND-to-WIND. Recharge for $40 which will last for 180 days.

WIND has a 14 day return policy.

In other words per person it shall be

(40+(5*6))*2 = 140 + taxes for the whole year ..right ??

Public Mobile would be 15*12=180/- for whole year unlimited incoming /outgoing for all no.s .... difference is 40/12 .. $3/month ..

But for the poster , it is important whether good coverage is there in his area ... I guess he should call and find out and experiment before hooking up .

Hi everyone,

I happen to know someone who recently signed for public mobile and then ended up cancelling it within 7 days..... reason, poor reception/coverage.....
i called public mobile and asked them regarding reliability of their reception in GTA area.... the Rep honestly acknowledged that there have been some complaint on poor reception in some parts of GTA... she said it is possible it maynot work in some parts ...she couldnt say specifically where though..... apparently that is because of the technology they are using.... i dont know the specifics but it is not 3G or 4G ..... because of that their plans work with their own phones, and you have to buy their phones....

i guess i am gonna have to research a little more to find a real competitor for Rogers :-)

Nope. Per person cost (for 360 days, not 365 days) =

$40 + $40 = $80 + tax (The $5 add-on / month will be deducted from this amount. So at the end of the year, you'll still have $20 in your account which you can use towards pay per use features, like outgoing calls or text). Just keep in mind your balance will carry forward as long as you top-up prior to the expiration of your original top-up duration.

Additionally the WIND includes Call display, Call waiting, forwarding etc.. at no charge.

I was personally debating between the 2 for my child, and in the end went with WIND, since the phone is going to be use occassionally and I already have 2 WIND phones in the family. Hence the WIND-to-WIND add-on makes sense.

Let me not go off track.. as Fido mentioned - let the op to decide based on coverage and usage.

Thank you Sudesh,
The plan sounds good...but i am afraid if thats good only for kids, like you mentioned you bought it for your child..... you also indicated you have 2 other wind mobile, how has your experience been with them? coverage/reception wise....

Although i dont use my cell too much, my "between us" usage has been quite heavy...and having a good reception at all time is very important for me....
I guess thats why these big companies are acting so much.... there seems to be not many companies around providing reliable and robust reception.... waiting for someone to prove me wrong....

Public Mobile operates on a CDMA technology, similar to Bell & Telus. They have partnered with Bell & Telus to provide roaming services. Hence you have to buy a phone from them.

OTOH, the other new players WIND and Mobilicity operate on a GSM technology. Keep in mind, WIND and Mobilicity operate on a UMTS frequency band, which means the regular Rogers / Fido phones will not work in that scenario. Their frequency is similar to T-Mobile from the US. There are quite a few phones available in the market which are compatible with both providers.

All the 3 new players, i.e. Public, WIND and Mobilicity do have coverage issues within the GTA. In terms of the signal dropping, a lot depends on the quailty of the phone. Sitting in the same room, I've seen one phone gets a signal while the other does not.
