Hi all CD's,
Today we recieved the Gas bill from Enbridge and we noticed its drastically charges are increase compare to last year, like "deliver to you" and "trasporation charges" increased by almost $18 on deliver to you charges and $13 on Transporatation charges.
My last monthly bill was around $60.22 and this month bill is $119.73.
This is our first winter in home is it normal in winter time to increased in gas usage by almost 4 times more compare to Dec. 2010.
Our usage on Dec 2010 was 197 Meter cube and this month in Jan-2011 usage is 397 meter cube.
does anyone have similiar experience or may i have gas leaks problem or something? We didn't smell any gas leakage inside the house.
your reply will be highly appriciated.
Regards
This is very common if u have a actual billing plan.
U have to ask for equal billing and then they will charge u a fixed amount per month and the last installment of the year they will adjust the short fall or the over payment.
You could ask someone to look at ur house for heat wastage but it all costs money, not sure it will reduce ur bill by much

Thanks Dude and Praticm for reply,
Pratcikm,
sorry reading for Dec is 137 M3 not 197 M3, so difference is 254 m3 in one month.
House is 7 years old and previous owner done insulation work around the house, like doors, windows, etc, They put a putty or silicon all around the joint at windows and doors, etc....
this is Townhouse and corner unit and around 1350 SQFT, we had three sides opens and is 3 stories TH, We have almost around 10 windows and 2 doors (One Main door and one backyard door). May this is the reason for higher consumption as well.........
Previously i set a temp, high at around 24' C and now we reduced to 21'C (always learns by mistakes i know its too high 24'C but now we corrected it.... )
One question Enbridge is really increased charges by almost $18 on "deliver to you charges" and $13 on "Transporatation charges." or not?

We keep our 2500 sq.ft home at around 20 C during day time and 18 C from 10 pm till 6 am. When no one's home, we cut the settings down to 16 C.
We use(d) appr. 250 cu m in Nov, 400 in Dec and Jan, 330 in Feb, 230 in Mar, 170 in Apr and 63 in May. So, our peak is Dec and Jan and also you can notice a spike in Dec compared to Nov. So, I'd say, the jump is normal.
My bill is $126 for a usage of 405 cu m from Union Gas. Because of EBP, I pay $73 flat, rain or shine.
You can exploit the number of doors and windows by keeping the blinds open on sunny days. It will help, to a certain extent, to keep the home warm. Also, we keep the rooms that we don't use shut with the vents only slightly open just to keep the room barely warm.

RBO, 24C is too hot.
Even worse, it will tend to suck up all the humidity inside the house and it will get very dry, which creates other issues like breathing problems, damage to wood furniture, etc.
dimple2001 suggested how you can control your house temperature based on time of day.
It is very efficient to do it this way.
We keep our temp. at 18 during the day, and it falls to 16 at night.
I can't speak for the Enbridge rates since I'm with Union Gas.
However, those two charges are derivative charges based on your consumption i.e. the more you consume, the higher will be the delivery and transportation charges.
You can get the full rate card from the Enbridge website or call them.
Then make sure you are being charged the correct rates.
Also, please pull out your older bills and compare the meter readings to make sure they are stacking up correctly.
If you see inconsistency or a huge jump/drop in any of the previous months, it could indicate a meter malfunction or faulty reading.
You can ask Enbridge for a re-reading, esp. if you have a manual meter.
Since this us your first winter, read up on energy efficiency.
Enbridge should have an energy guide on their website.
If not, download the Union Gas one that I have used:
http://www.uniongas.com/residential/energyconservation/education/wiseenergyuse.asp
There are other resources on the CMHC website as well:
http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/enefcosa/enefcosa_002.cfm
CMHC publishes a home maintenace guide for a very reasonable fee ($20 if I remember) that I found very useful as well.

Referring to the above posts: keeping the house at 18/20 deg during day - isn't it bit too cold? Especially for kids?
