The name and surname are in the wrong place in the PR for my wife and son. (Surname in the place of Name). This was due to the mistake in the Indian passport. We had landed in 2009. During the last visit to Middle East we got the names and surnames corrected by changing passports from indian Embassy from where the old passports had been issued. Now they are back in Canada. We had done this hoping that this was the first step to get the canadian records corrected. But upon calling up CIC office they informed us that we have to go through the Legal name change procedure to get this corrected. Appreciate to get inputs from people who had been in such situations.

In short, name change is the only way.

At the time of application, you should have put the names at right place.
