Hi, I am thinking of migrating from Singapore to Canada. I would like to hear the views of someone who might have gone through this phase. Any regrets or suggestions?
Thanks,
I will suggest Canada over Singapore; it is a free country and no compulsion to join the army at the age of 18 to serve for the country but it is nothing wrong joining the national army some family may like and some family may not. What is your profession? Canada is a beautiful Country and it enjoys the most benefit of the multiculturalism. Singapore is also a beautiful country but it depends on the factors those are influencing you and your family to move out of the Singapore? If your parents and relatives are residing south part of the India, I will advise you stick to Singapore due to proximity. The factors may be crucial for you to decide rather than other Singaporeans who are living in Canada. I have never been to Singapore but I saw the country in an old movie.
My profession is IT-systems. The motivation for moving to Canada is for the higher education for kids. I would like to hear from anyone who has moved from Singapore to Canada. As you have mentioned both countries are good. This makes the decision even tougher.
Did you got PR or find a sponsor? If not, please note that IT is almost closed for Canadian immigration. My brother live in spore. Based on our discussions, I realized that quality of life is slightly better here. He like spore's proximity to India and complains about transit. He cannot afford car there. Totally opposite here. I hate the distance b/w Canada and India but like the Car affordability here. That made a lot of diff in our life styles. While he rush to India for every long weekend, My long weekends are travelling and shopping. For similar positions in technology, my earnings are 15% more and savings are 10% less than him. He visit India 4 to 5 times a year while I visit once in every 15 months. If I visit more often, Savings will be much less than that.
As previous poster said, Canada is such a beautiful country if you explore it.
We moved from Singapore..... We were there for almost 10 yrs.... I love Singapore and now Canada too..... If you have boys... Then it's a no brainer..... Also, most kids have to move out for higher studies to Australia/UK/USAetc......
I believe that recently Singapore has started changing their policy wrt PR's..... Making it almost impossible to own property there..... Rents are also too high there..... Local schooling is not great ....and international schools are expensive..... Due to COE and parking charges..... We always found taxi's a cheaper and better option.....
Quality of life is fabulous in Singapore as is proximity to India.... Savings are great due to CPF..... Healthcare is better.... Tax is lower.... Weather is fine.... In IT, Singapore is a stable hub so job security is good.... Lots of Desi's....
My suggestion would be..... Please come here only armed witha good job..... Then you will be able to adjust to and enjoy the country..... Otherwise, you will end up feeling you made a wrong choice.....for us, we had no choice since we have 2 sons..... And we did not want them to serve the Army.....
Eventually, the choice is yours..... Everyone has a unique POV and personal situation.... All the best......
Thanks for the response. I don't have to worry on the national service as I am blessed with two daughters. I think that Singapore may not be good for the further studies for them.
I agree with you that I shall try to find job before moving to Canada. Did you find any contact in Singapore that may be helpful in this? I have visited Toronto and it seems good. But as a tourist it is hard to judge the city. May I know in which city do u stay?
Great advice by Geetakhanna. Job or plan for regular earning is the key for your happiness in any migration situation.
If you do not need regular visits to India ( for whatever the reason) and okay with some cold weather .... plan to secure a job / financial planning ..... then move to Canada. You will be HAPPY here and kids will have a better/secured life.
