Thanks TK - Not exactly sure how the trust fund works, there is no link or other information.

The toronto star has updated their article to state this - very sad. If true, this is a very serious allegation and the owner of the station should be punished as well. He's refuting the charge as of now, hopefully there will be a full investigation into this too.

I think more than the owner , its an industry's malpractice - as we had a similar incident some times back .... Its time we should write to our representatives in the Provincial & Fedral Government to sort this out . ............
I wonder if the story would have had more impact if it was a non new immigrant . Kudos to the media though for highlighting this ....... Was extremely rending to watch the coverage on Omni TV last night ...

For sure such kind of 'threats' are made by owners and many more unwritten policies are implemented when one works on cash. Unfortunately, fellow employees may not come forward to substantiate the claims made by family and friends. It remains to be seen , that how authorities , if interested, will investigate.
Mr. Prajapati's reaction was of a desperate man trying to save unnecessary drainage of his hard earned money. It already happened earlier as he told to his friend, discussions with owner must have occurred, if instructions were only to note down the plate number and no salary will be deducted, he would'nt have gone over board.
Heart goes out to the family who lost him.
A very tragic incident indeed.
It is exploitation of workers at its worst if pay is deducted from salary. It is a minimum pay job with fair degree of personal injury risk especially at night even without the pay cut for "gas and dash" incidents. It is not uncommon for armed criminals to walk into gas stations and convenience stores and demand cash.

poor guy only " run after" since otherwise company would have cut a propositional loss from his salary.
The number plate in most such cases used to be fake.
So that salary cut pressure let the chap run after the car.

Very unfortunate, May his soul rest-in-peace..
Shocking to hear that such practices of deducting from salary is prevalent, even though the position had close to minimum wage..
Isn't the gas store owner responsible for his death, by compelling him to get into such recovery measures by chasing such drivers...
