Driving in India

I am holding OCI and travelling to India. I have few questions regarding driving in India.

1. Can I get IDL (Internation dr. lic) here which I can use to drive in India.
2. Is my Canadian dr. licence be helful to get Indian dr. lic.

I have to stay there for couple of months and just want to know what will be the best options which permit me to drive in India.

IDL is valid in India and IDL is valid for a year. This might be the easier and simpler option. Don't know about question 2.

If you are staying for two months get an IDL from CAA. Why go through the hassle of Indian DL just for two months.

Are you going to drive in Metro?

If you got in Accident then its all together different ball game for IDL dealing with Cops n 'Victim' - specially if they realise that you are NRI & Leaving Country in two months.

I would not bother driving in India if it is for only two months ... Hiring Driver or Rental with driver if cab is not an option.

Agreed with Maharaj. Unless, you have no other option its best not to get behind the wheel in India, especially in the major metros. Chances of you getting into an accident are too high, as nobody follows traffic rules in India. If you get into an accident or hit a passerby, then nobody can guarantee your personal safety as the general public generally looks for excuses to beat up drivers. If you avoid the frustoo public, then the police will leave no stone unturned in fleecing you.

Finally, even if you do manage to get through the two months without any untoward incident, you will find driving in Canada difficult initially, due to all the bad habits that you would have imbibed after driving in India for an extended period.

Thats what I do ... where traffic rules are forgotten by all , its a folly to practice them .... I realized this when I stopped @ a red light and guess what .... I was the only one who stopped and people behind me started honking .
