Ashwani,
I have Googled and read about tickets and demerit points.

It is an oxymoron, in the sense that parking ticket is a ticket but it does not come with any demerit point and hence will not affect insurance.

Then there are Minor, Major and Serious Conviction tickets which come with demerit points. Though demerit points itself does not affect insurance, these tickets (which come with demerit points) will affect insurance.
So the OP will see the rise in insurance premium, when the ticket is paid and unless they fight it out in court to have it thrown away.

As many will say, if you are at fault, suck it up, pay the fine, get the conviction and move on.
However, if you decide to fight it out in court, you have a little bit of chance for the ticket to be thrown away or the fine reduced.

Hope this helps.

Peace by Murali

What is the next step? If the assessment is done at the body shop recommended by insurance company do we have to pay for the repairs in advance and get refunded from insurance later?

Normally, in that case, the insurance company will directly reimburse the body shop.

As dimple said insurance company directly reimburse the body shop , there is one more thing that you should consider .
Even though you are allowed to visit your own shop but it is wiser to go to insurance company's prefered body shop . Any work done by the shops that are listed with insurance company is backed by 100 % guarantee and warranty . In case you are not happy with end result it is much easier to dispute and get the situation rectified . Whereas to private shop once insurance company pays they will not pay again for any reason .

Ashwani,
if you go with a trusted garage, he also will back his work 100%.

if you go to a insurance listed preferred company, cost of the work will be twice the normal cost but you need not pay anything from your own hand.

My experience is that the insurance preferred company also goofs up work. I took photo's of the car before the accident , after the accident and after the repairs and got them to do the work again. Even after the rework, I was satisfied only 75%.

If your insurance rate is based on the money that the insurance company shells out, I would prefer to go to my trusted garage, where the bill will be 50% less. Also note that once they find out that only your insurance company will pay, they will immediately start quoting twice the normal rate.

Tread carefully. There are criminals out there.

TK thanks for the heads up but I can see that you have many misconception related to insurance .
Insurance rate is increased after conviction and is INDEPENDENT from the fact how much claim was paid out for your accident .
I had 4 non fault accidents and have dealt with preferred and trusted garage .
Both will bill insurance company to the max allowed . With private garage they tend to go overboard for some parts than insurance company guidelines where as preferred garage knows exact limits .
I yet have to see a advantage to go to a private garage .

Your post is certainly misleading .

Ashwani,
No it is not.
If it is a non fault accident, your claim is billed to the at fault accident person + his claim. The non - fault accient part has $ 0 claim in his records.

Say one is paying $ 200 a month on insurance and his at fault insurance claim works out to $ 7000 and $ 7000 (both parities bill), his insurance may work out to $ 600 a month.

Say the same has a at fault claim of $ 2000 and $ 2500, his insurance may work out to $ 400 a month.

There is a complex set of formulas (some IT person working on insurance will tell you), that will determine the raise in insurance amount based on at fault amount payout.

So if you go to your own trusted garage (when at fault) and you bill the insurance company $ 1200 instead of going to the insurance company preferred garage and paying $ 2200, it will affect your at fault insurance escalation/revision.

If I am not at fault, then I will go to the best garage in town, drink their free coffee / snacks, enjoy their TV, Enjoy their 3 day free car and have it billed to the sucker who dinged my car.

Also please know that in Canada, many desi's that I have known, go to their trused garage, do repairs for $ 1000 and bill the company as per what is allowed in the claim (Say $ 2200) and pocket the rest. Yes. Their insurance will go up for the $ 2200 claimed but it will be recovered over a period of 5-10 years but then the person has $ 1200 as advance to offset the claim. Who knows, they may move to India, Gulf, USA in a matter of months.

Ashwani, you have a lot to learn of what these Canadians do !!!
