I had driving exp in US for 6 Years in 5 US States. I exchanged my US DL with ON DL without any hassles. I had copies of all my US DLs which i provided at time of exchange and Ontario DMV were able to pull all the record from all US States at that moment itself. They verified all information and gave me ON G License.
I did not had to bring any driver abstract or anything from US and nobody asked for it. But your mileage may vary. The best idea is to get them while you are still in US.
To get Ontario insurance, I had provided coverage letter(s) from US insurance companies and copies of US DLs from all States.
Yeah, First Year, the Canadian Insurance Companies gave me ridiculous quotes. But If you look for insurance companies who are operating in US and Canada, they will consider your US records and will give you better rates.
Hope this helps!
