Hey Sunanda
I am not understanding what the real issue is here . It is so simple to understand that you can have only 1 license and you need to return the other if you have 2 . Just go to US DMV and tell them you have a canadian one and you do not need this one , that s all .
If you need a canadian one , Canada will xhange your US license for a canadian one and vice versa but you cannot have both at the same time .
To commute to USA to work , you do not need a US license , A cdn is fine as long as you have registered your car in canada.

What people want to do is trying to keep two photo IDs one for each country thats why they donot want to surrender canadian d.licence in USA or vice verca.. In the past different states didn't have a common data base in US and one can easily hide Arizona d.license and get a new one from Florida for whatever reason's mostly for higer insurance premiums if you have accidents in the previous one , Now these insurence companies demanded a common data base and they see canada as an other state due to treaty. Now it is illegal to have two license from different states b'cause it is showing your residents at two different places which is illegla and illogical, once they grab you they can send your case to FBI also to investigate why did you do that, if you involve in an accident then insurance companies will be after you if they find this out. People are doing this just for the sake of another id and they are ignoring dangerous part , please get rid of this mentality you are in canada dont do such a things which bring scrutiny to all community we still are paying prices of those people who did these kind of things even before we came here. I know some of us will still do that but my suggestion is one day you will get caught ...

I had returned my WA license and got an WA ID by paying $4 . Getting an ID is no issue at all . You do not have to keep a DL to be an ID

Thanks for all your replies. The general consensus seems to be that it is illegal to keep 2 drivers licenses.
However I've trawled thru the DMV California website and also thru the ministry of transport, Ontario websites and I don't seem to find any information which seems to indicate that this. (it does say that you have to exchange your out of province license to get an Ontario license - and thats what I did - I exchanged my expired california drivers license. Meanwhle the Department of Motor Vechicles in California sent me a new renewed California drivers license - which is how I ended up with both licenses)
So if anyone can point out a link ... that'd be great
Hi Kercan7478
Our role is to point out what is right and legal , Whatever you do or any one else does different from what is legal is their own decision. We are all responsible for our actions and their consequences.
However One thing , I can guarantee you is that if ever , you get into a problem because of this , this excuse will not work . It is like saying , I did not know that I had to pay taxes so thats why I did not pay .
If you really want a confirmation tell what happened to the DMV of where ever you live and let them tell you what needs to be done but that is only if you are willing to do what is right .
Each one is on his own
Take care
