Economy has to follow the Sine wave pattern, so it is highly unlikely that predictions will hold good.
I would expect a slow down as every one is predicting a strong growth in East, See East can not survive without the exports to the west and the west is already playing vicious currency war, East has to respond otherwise risking the exports.
I was expecting Bank of Canada to reduce the rate this week, Poor suckers! aren't we.

Interesting to see the equations in forthcoming years. 8000/month salary in 2002 and in 2010 it's 50K plus.
Can we expect the same 600% growth then in 2018 it would be 3 lacs per month (36 lacs per year) for NON IITians?
and what would be the cost of living at that time?

Manasvi.
I am not in IT.
At the time the thread was active (in 2005), I would have said Rs. 30000 a month (before tax). My classmates were earning between 30K to 45 K around that time (per month).
But then 2005 started the boom of India and the same classmates that I mentioned are now earning between 2 lakhs a month to 3 lakhs a month in India.
However, I would say 1 lakh a month (before taxes) in Chennai, 1.25 lakhs in bengaluru or 2 lakhs a month in Mumbai or delhi. Note that I will not make the same mistake that I did coming here and hence will fix a job in India before relocating.
Peace

Any input for the cities like Jaipur,Vadodara,Chandigarh, Panchkula etc. I am just picking up above average cities.
I have heard rents for similar apartments (decent area and decent apartments) in the city of Coimbatore (in the south in TN), is around 12k.
I am not sure if the salaries would be lower in such places. Isn't salary tied to cost of living in a more significant manner than what you see around here in Canada? That was my impression, at least.

In my example the situation is little different. My query can be answered based on the following conditions:
1. The person is not willing to do any job as he/she has enough savings to generate enough money from the bank investments (Approx Rs 80,000 per month). This means there is no dire need to live in metros where the expenses are high.
2. The person is already have a house, so no need to worry about mortgage or rent.
Based on the above conditions do you think Rs 80,000 pm will not be enough.

This query can be best answered by you yourself ...... what kind of lifestyle will be looking for once you return ....
Just to give an example what kind of car will you be driving, that is if you will be driving at all ..... as TK mentioned you can get a used car for 1 lakh and spend some money on it and drive it or you can get a new Toyota Corolla for 10-12 lakhs ... how will you be paying for this car .... installaments or from your savings. The running cost of car will also range as per your use / lifestyle ..... it can cost you anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 per month on fuel and maintanence.
Secondly what is your family structure like... do you have children .... what kind of schools are available in your locality, are they good enough or would you like to send them to a boarding school. Again depending on your situation it can cost anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 per month. further more these children will need to go to college, again depending on how good they are in their studies will they go to a governent college or will have to go to private college where paying fees will make a huge dent in your savings.
Again what kind of lifestyle do you want ..... electricity in some towns in India is not regular, hell even in metros it is not ....... so will you need a generator and will you need AC's, i know a lot of people who have one AC and whole family sleeps in one room, are you going to live like that or you going to use two or maybe three AC's depending on your lifestyle. In delhi if you use three AC's during summer month for more than 8 hours per day you can end up paying anywhere from 8-9000 for electricity !!!!!!
So it boils down to what and how you are going to live so you can make this decision yourself .... in the end do not forget the taxman ... they will take their pound of flesh and if i am not mistaken it would be anywhere from 10-12,000 per month, based on 80,000 !!!!!!

But I wanted to guess is that if a person who earns Rs 200,000 per month(Spending 12 hrs everyday including driving time)
and lives in big metros will have the same lifestyle and another one earning Rs 80,000 per month (Doing nothing) and living in an average town will be more relaxed and happier. It is like living a retirement life.

I totally agree that salaries and cost of living are directly related.
