To me, it is not just the salary. I just came to Canada from the US last week, realizing that I wouldn't be able to get a green card. My other option would have been to go back to India in a few months for about Rs 65K pm. If I chose that option, in a couple of years, I would probably be able to aim for upto 1 lakh pm.
But I'm in IT, and geez, I see the work and lifestyle of people working in large offshore companies, and have felt that it is not worth it, atleast for me. Constant fire-fighting and the peer pressures, not to mention the insomnia - sometimes I think there is no respect for time.
Over and above that, there is the quality of life..
This is just my opinion as of now, as I have lived most of my working life outside India. Wouldn't mind going if I'm sent to India on business trips, once in a while, though
Five years ago, I was offered as much as Rs. 15 lakhs/year. I had several offers between 10-15 lakhs. I turned all down. Just the negotiation process by Indian companies told me that I most probably wouldn't be able to fit in to Indian work culture. I never worked in India. Only place I ever worked was in USA.
Also, I just couln't stand the crowd, the noise, the cramped living spaces, the filth and the pollution. I don't think I can live or work in India for any amount of money. For me, it was lifestyle and environment issue than money.
In last 15 years, I visited India only twice. I prefer to use the money, I would spend visiting India, to visit different countries.

Is lifestyle n environment in Canada that different fr India that a person for good salary /income wounld not like to resettle in his home country?
( I hv never been to Canada )
Probably no amount!
Can’t stand the crowds, dodging human and animal excrement on the street, the heat and dust, the frequent power outages and knowing that my neighbor as well as the new slum two miles away pilfers electricity!
The North American work environment wins hands down too.
Yup, notwithstanding Canada’s winter, I’d rather be in TO any day………
10 years back I asked a well off Indian friend who was studying in the US @ that time -- ' U have all the comforts in India since u r rich plus u have a big social circle wud u come back ' . He replied ' even though I have the best cars where r the roads 2 drive them ? where is the clean space where I can excercise ? How do I get rid of the pollution ??
After 10 yrs in the US the guy IS coming back . No he didnt flip flop he s just evolved as he likes 2 put it - ' After 10 years I realise that wherever I go Im still an alien - I cannot grow in the US like in India coz India has undergone changes recently -- u have colonies with 24 hr water electricity and a controlled lifestyle for the rich and famous which by passes the daily regular life of the commoners ---- for eg stay in Gurgaon & work in Delhi '. Not 2 mention he has got a good salary offer .
Vaied circumstances , varied opinions all personal and correct at that point of time ....... I have wondered where I wud I have been had I been in India for last 6 years. May be @ Infy / Oracle or in the words of Amitabh Bachchan upon being asked where wud he be if not for the film industry -- ' Ilaahbad mein doodh bech rahe hotey '!!!
The thread continues --- how much sal wud make u return ??
Manasvi.
Firstly fellas..no offense..i guess discussion is about people who worked and lived in india and left home country, due to watever personal professional reasons, and not about people who never worked or lived in India.
2ndly It is tuff to decide to go back home just by calculating the numbers coz many people left not coz of money but coz of better qualitative life, as some have mentioned, traffic, population etc. so even if the pay package will be good the clean life which one gets used to, in Canada or US or some cities of Europe for that matter, will be not be easy to have here even ig u live in Gurgaon or Noida. After all the problem is not still I feel of population than rather of civic sense and slow take it easy "chata hai" approach wala system. But then we cant just blame govts too COZ I have seen how suddenly we Indians become so civlised and never spit or just throw the cigrate butt anywhere when we move outisde India. Why not here too when we were living here. Lets go back to the main issue now ..3. To the point ..Iam in India,(part of the confused lot about moving or no) have travelled abroad number of times..I feel t..o be able to have a clean life with a good house (new concept ones with clubs security etc which itself costs around 60 lacs 3 beds in Gurgaon, rentals 25000+5000 maintenc) 2 kids (shri ram or gd goenka etc)14000 car (instalment 10000+5000(gas)) So the total of this only is 59k..lets take 60k.. plus individual expenses and savings as per case to case. So conclusion is dear pay pakge of 12 lacs (lac a month) as some have mentioned is good to start to think to move. But then as someone said here...u can own a merce in india but u cannot own the road. but outisde india u feel as if u own the road too. an example I had a terrible accident in the month of June 2004 on National Highway while coming back from Chandigarh. It was just luck that we were at the speed of 70KM/hr (with family) and out of the world a NEEL GUY crosses and stops for a second and moves and this is within a GAP OF 5 mtrs from my car and after puting brakes too(though more cars behind me I couldnt press more on brake pedal) the car smashed on the rear part of the "POOR" animal (which is donated in a temple by devotees and they run coz person who sells ..catches them again to sell for donation) We all were in the car and car smashed from the front..and radiator etc broke so the car was not in condition to move. Anyways the story that how I brought it to delhi is another chapter. But u know..when i reached the service station next day there were 4 more cars with same accidents but on other highways. Just to give u one of the examples. But this doesnt mean that accidents dont happen on highways of TO or NY just that those causes are out of our hands and even if it happens u dont just wait for the help or highway polica for hours wiht children in the middle of the road. Its pathetic. No human value..yes animal value.
take care....
