No matter how you negotiate it is very hard to get a deal on Honda or Toyota cars. You can definitely get a great deal on cars that are not very hot.
Invoice price should be a basis for the negotiation. Dealer also gets volume discounts other than the manufacturer rebates. It is almost imposssible to determine how much volume discount the dealer gets as it varies from dealer to dealer.
Another trick is if you can find out from any internal source if the car is lying in the lot for close to 3 months as most of the dealers get 90 day credit & the longer they keep the car they have to actually pay for the car from their pocket.
Another smart idea to get maximum discount is buy during the last week of december an earlier year model car as the dealers have incentive to get rid of the old model from the inventory.
