Dear Desis,
I tried to get Brooke Bond Green Label Coffee powder for brewing South Indian type
filter coffee in the espresso machine. So far, I manged to get it from the USA.
Now I am trying to find it from any store in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey...etc. One shop had a 2003 stock of some other coffee powder. Most of the shops had only instant coffee powder or Tea.Any suggestions?Or any other Indian brand available anywhere?
Missing strong coffee in the mornings........

Please note that the Indian coffee powder is much more thicker and stronger due to the addition of \"Chicory\" which may be any place from 5 to 40%. The coffee powders here the brewing type do not have it. The instant coffee powder you buy from Brooke Bond has around 30% chicory, which is not supposed to be good for health.
There are plenty of Indian shops in Mississauga, which carry thisInstant coffee, and you could organize it through your friends in Mississauga.
The other alternative is to look for coffee powders from local sources which have seeds like our Indian seeds. Any of our fellow CD's from Bangalore can give us the names and you could look for similar coffee powders from Canadian specialty coffee sellers. I know for a fact that many South Indian families in Canada, buy these coffee powder and make blends to match the Indian taste, and in many places it matches beautifully. Though it may cost you a little more than the Tim Hortons.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
Thanks Shankaracharya,
I have been using various blends available locally. In the US, I used to go to Cost Plus,World Market and get Kenya AA, and get it ground there itself. Though , as you said, it was costlier, the taste was good.
I was using Leo coffee in India sans chickory. I despise Chickory. But,here the coffee is very light if I use Medium roast, and very bitter if i use dark roast. So, I just add a little to the local blend.I am trying different coffee powders right from Folgers, Nabob, President's choice, No name, etc etc, in different blends..........
Still........."Ammavin Kaimanam Veesum kappi pol ellai"

Green label is not instant coffee but filter coffee powder. Bru is instant cofee powder.
I have seen either Narsus Idayam or Green Label cofee at Shanku Brand (Sri Lankan Store) at Dixie and Steels in Brampton (905-488-9657). No idea about Vancouver !

Have you tried Chennai Video & Groceries in Surrey? We've never been there yet, but have been seeing their ads during the Vanna Malargal programme on Saturdays.
I'm not hot on coffee and my wife doesn't mind instant coffee, so we're ok without it, though!
On a separate note, we tried looking for a wet grinder (for making idly/dosa) in desi shops in Little India, but no one seemed to know what we meant - they only pointed us to the Sumeet mixer-grinder which we already have. We found them in NJ & NY when we were in US (should have bought it then!), but can't find one in Vancouver!

Try http://www.hotdishes.com.It" rel="nofollow">LINK is a Sanjose, USA company.I ordered Santha 110V wet grinder from them. The performance is super.
But I find 2 litre capacity grinder's stone to be heavy.
Happy Idli and Dosa days!
Cheers!
Thanks for the tips on coffee powder. Can you give the location of that store please?
