Rogers phone - from traditional to cable..................

hi there,

currently rogers is convincing us to switch our home phone from traditional leased line to their own cable line , everything remains the same but it does not support some of the long distance service providers service so can some one give me some idea for the same .............surprisingly we can use calling card ..........!!!!!!!!!!

i call to India mostly and paying 7.9 cents now.

the sales guy could not give me any long distance service company name that could be supported by their network.

thanks in advance.

I got the same request and I told them no way! I told them I've heard that phone lines over cable is horrible and I prefer to stick with my current service. He didn't even try and sell me on it! He just hung up the phone. I think he was sort of admitting that the cable phone line is bad.

It is cheaper for them to provide you the phone line through the modem/cable line as they currently lease the traditional lines from Bell. A few friends did make the switch and found the call quality to be horrible (hissing noises and static). I'm not sure if anyone here also has experienced the same.

Hope this helps.

There are much more problems associated with this.

This sort of Digital phone
1. Will not be listed in 411 which may hurt your application for Credit card etc..,
2. Long distance problem.

BTW, do you guys know any bare minimum land line service. My plan is switch to a bare minimum land line and then subscribe a VOIP line for calling US, Canada long distance etc..,

With digital cable phone, you will have to pay extra to get DSL (dry DSL line) or be stuck with Rogers for internet.

Cheapest bundle of analog home phone (9 features) + internet + free long distance in US/Canada is provided by Primus ($70/month). I do not have Primus, so I do not know any issues with it like customer service, etc.

We use Primus - VOIP (sorry I am not technical and dont know all the specs)
I dont find it bad at all - once in a while it acts funny but that is rare.

Within the $45 / month you get all the features (ie/ call waiting, call display, 3 way, voice mail etc), includes unlimited calling in NA.

We dont have a land line and its a pain when the power goes out - but for emergencies we have cell phones.

We used to have a regular Landline and it was always around $60 for basic, even without all the features and not including long distance.

It shouldn't be missed here that Rogers' aggresive marketing if it isn't obvious to you already is almost to take advantage of Bell's slow death. Or at least the demise of their monopoly. So they seem to be out-to-get all disgruntled Bell haters predominantly and lock them up long term with discounts....bundled discounts that seem attractive now.

Quite frankly, as a consumer, you don't have THAT MANY choices in Canada in the telecom area.

My friend working at RIM tells me that they get THE MOST NUMBER of complaints from Rogers who are taking in more customers they can possibly handle and providing poor service.

If you want to go the VOIP route, you have Vonage as well. But my friend in Detroit has it and I can tell you it is NOT clear.

For now, at least for the landline I am sticking with Bell till VOIP irons itself out.

Hello,

I would suggest you to go with ROGERS Home phone, there are basically three reasons for that.

1) You don't have to pay anything if you move to another place (Bell charge you $55 for just to move your phone to another place, i don't know about Cable TV \ Internet). I used to have Bell phone and when i asked them to move my phone to my new house, they said it will charge you $55, then i asked them to cancle my phone, they did it and even they didn't try to save a customer and on top of it they were very rude.

2) I have rogers home for a year now and so called cable phone is just amazing.... no static ....... no noise, it just great.

3) If you have Bell phone and you order DSL......... then the DSL speed will depend on your location from the main DSL switch, that means if you are so far away from their Switch then you will get the weaker packets....... and Bell has no solution for that problem...... call them up and they tell you the same thing..... talk to TECHNICAL SUPPORT not just the customer service.
