hi desis,
we r thinking of returning to india after a year in canada. we r not sure if we will return (a very very slim chance). are there any formalities to be taken care of like informing the child tax authorities? can we keep our bank accounts with a lil money in it. is it possible to close it at a later a date without having to come back? will we be asked any qns when we land in india by the customs?

would like help in clarifying our doubts.

hi timon. we have not taken the decision but we r seriously considering it. personally i feel people should be where they r totally at home and comfortable and at heart i have not felt it here. i have met very very nice people and had pleasant experiences. but home is where the heart is. hence.

Since you are a PR, you should not face any problem when you land in India. You have an Indian passport and it's your right to enter and exit the country (India) as frequently as you wish.

If you are leaving the country on a prolonged absence or your address changes, you have to notify Revenue Canada in case you are receiving the Canada Child Tax Benefit and Universal Child Care. Why don't you call up their toll free line to find out the implications of moving abroad?

In terms of bank accounts, you can still keep them open. although some banks may demand that you be present in person to close down an account. Again, it would be best if you speak to the bank and find out the implications.

There was a poster who had shifted back to India for the same reasons (to Baroda I believe) - Raj... something ..... I don't know whether he still posts in , but it would be a learning experience to know how he has settled down back in India after his stint in Canada.
