I have used Tide and Sunlight and haven't noticed any difference between the two.
I buy whichever one is on sale.
Haven't used Gain so far.

Thanks pratickm for the answer.

Unlike somethings, to really know about a detergent, it takes someone who used the detergent several times on the same clothes (so that we know how the clothes last under those detergents).

I have always used Tide but now I am thinking of following what you said (buying whatever is on sale) as one of my friend said she used both Tide and Gain and didn't find much difference.

I am assuming the major brands of detergents sold in North America meet minimum quality standards and hence we don't have to worry about the way they work on our clothes

If the cloth is really expensive or delicate and you are concerned about it, then first try hand-washing a corner of it with the detergent dipped in a tumbler of water.
If there is no discoloration or damage, then use in the washing machine.

I think washing machines and heat dryers do more damage to the color and quality of a cloth than the detergent itself.

We use the Kirkland brand from Costco.

But hey...if your're clothes are expensive and delicate aren't you supposed to dry clean? Why the heck would you put them in those expensive cloth disintegrators?
