Can a wire be connected from a wireless router ??
I am shifting to a house which has wireless router and my dektop doesnt have a wireless interface card . So , is it possible to connect a cable from the router to my PC desktop ?
Whats the price of wireless cards and are there any compatibility issues with the mother board / processor ?

Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.
I am not a computer guy. Mostly laptops come with a wireless card so before you buy a wireless card check with dell or check the configuration when you bought it. Everything is on the pkg. list. I bought a dell laptop 600m about 2 yrs back it came with a wireless card.
Check Tiger.ca for wireless router they offer good deals, they also have a store somewhere in mississauga

I would recommend you go for a Wireless Router that supports 802.11g technology.
Basically, 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b and would work with 802.11b clients(PC/Laptop PCMCIA cards).
Now a days Bell Sympatico High speed internet provides you with a Modem that has a built in Router functionality that supports 802.11g.
If you have Sympatico then why not use this free feature.
While setting up your wireless home network you need to make sure of the following 4 points -
1) Choose a unique SSID. SSID identifies your wireless network. I see a lot of people using their wireless network with the default SSID like 'Netgear', 'SMC', 'Linksys', 'mywireless' etc. If you neighbour has the same SSID eg 'Netgear', it will cause interference to both of you.
2) Choose a unique Channel - 802.11b/g has 11 Channels. Out of these 11 only 3 are non overlapping channels, 1, 6, 11. Before you configure your Wireless router using a specific channel, do a site survey using your laptop with a Wireless card. Try to detect the wireless networks in your area and see what channels are used by your neighbour's wireless routers(if any). eg. If you detect people using channels, 1 and 11. Set yours to be channel 6.
3) Setup Security on your Wireless Router (Atleast 128 bit WEP) - Now a days home wirless routers are very easy to configure. They come with a very user friendly web interface. Setup a 128 bit WEP key on your Wireless Router. You will need to setup the same 128 bit WEP key on your client(Laptop and Desktop if using wireless). This will make sure that only you or someone who knows the WEP key can hop on to your wireless network.
4) Do not broadcast SSID - Last important security is NOT to broadcast your SSID. There is a check box on each and every wireless router configuration pages. Basically, if you do not broadcast your SSID, no one except you will know what SSID you are using, unless some Hacker sitting in your neighbourhood is using a high end sniffer software.
Hope this helps.
Well nothing wrong with providing your neighbour with free internet. But what you dont want is someone parking his car outside your house at 3 am and download porn using your connection
There was an incident like this couple months or years back. so do put WEP security on your wifi. its quite easy.
