when i came to canada first 5 years back, i also stayed in downtown for about 6 months. So reading ur natural reaction took me back in time as i had very similar feelings........
As far as indian food is considered , there is one pakistani restaurant called mehraan . Its north of church st near church and gerrard street. I dont know how far its from ur residence but its about 5 dollars per head and the food is ok.
Another thing u may want to do is write the driving test exam as u have some spare time now. Dont buy the book as u can borrow it from any desi bhai/bahan living/working near ur residence.
Again good luck and happy job hunting.
Yes one of the things on my agenda is to get the driving license. Also about restaurants, there are few restaurants on bloor west namely Natraj, Red Rose and samrat. Food is expensive but they all are not really very good. I definately miss home cooked.
About locality I am not sure yet. I have seen areas near Jane Rd which are black dominated. I stayed to this area as we have one relative and i thought it would be better to stick around a place where i have someone to turn to in case of emergency. But i guess real experience would come after living in the area only.

Manjeet,
Welcome !
Over the next few days - you would get to see and talk to a few desis at the bus stops, TTC stations, libraries etc asking you the following questions:
Openers: Are you from India. (Be objective).
Where are you from? Do you speak Hindi? When did you come to Canada?
Closed probes: Did you get a job in your field. ( at this point you have to be tactical) and then it goes on...until one of you reach his/her destination. He would ask questions which you never thought of.
It's good to strike a conversation with a familiar face. I had my own share with these faces in the crowd. At times, it gets too personal. One such happened when I was on my way for an interview.
Let not your morale be dampened by the fact that the man speaking( as an example) to you was an engineer wiith some company in India doing a labor job here in Canada. Remember - One swallow does not make a summer.
But keep meeting two of them every day and see how biased you could be. You could end up having a bad day.
Keep a PMA. ( positive mental attitude). Relax. This country has a lot to offer to those who dare to dream.
Good Luck - my friend..
