@Fido
I agree 100% with your statement of s/w pro from Slovenia, I have also experienced same not only 10 yrs ago but 16 yrs ago in USA. After dwelling into the reason for me not being like that I understood that I give my family higher priority and there by do not take time out from them to invest into my research.
Yes, I have with me what I bargained for and I am happy with it. After all at the end of the day its the balance of life for which I am coming to Canada otherwise I would be in USA .
This is not a question about patriotism or Indian Engineers being the best of the best in the world. I haven't meant that and haven't belittled the contributions of inventors or doctors all around the world who contributed to the human society. Obviously the numbers are there in India and China. But that doesn't mean numbers have helped folks to get into jobs. What you are saying is that the people in other countries who hire people of Indian or Chinese origin are really fascinated by the population numbers of India or China or a interview process that tests whether the person can do the job or not. Also I have met folks from India and China who also can do what you have provided by the Slovenia example. There are intelligent folks everywhere and they don't have to ride by the education system in one place. The education in India has helped a lot of people to come out of the dark ages and contribute to the economies of the world. The only problem we have is to educate the rest in India. The education system in India has not prevented the brightest of the bright to come out and show their talents. Neither it has derailed them. People might have but not the system. For eg one of my students in an IT institute who was from North East was really brilliant. He was designing compilers and desktop applications on his own. He was not interested in getting any degree. The condition of the job market was forcing him to. So the education system in India has not restricted him to show his talent. It has not forced him to go this or that way. His path has been chosen by him.
@Sajeesh: Well said, buddy.
Sir ,
Lets try and go back and see what we are arguing about ...
You said that it does not matter whether one crams or understands some thing conceptually which is the basic difference b/w the Indian schooling system and here .
Then you further stated that Prez of US / Canada say that good engineers / docs are not being produced here .......... Please provide a link to substantiate this as this is just not true !!
In all your arguments , you have been trying to prove the superiority of the Indian ed system by claiming that so there have been so many founders / co founders and all ....
Why don't you take into note the countless people from the same ed system which are languishing in call centers and are just doing average jobs ?? If an ed system is so good , it should be good for a majority .......
Please re read my refinery example ..... the schooling ed system of India is like this ( correct me if I am wrong ) : The teacher is frustrated with his low salary and is interested in tutions - he comes to the class , chalks some formulae down , solves some numericals based on that and gives excercises to be done - He does not explain the concept by providing some good practical real life examples ... K you learn the formulae but Don't you agree that it would be better if you understood the concepts behind the formula ...... the same teacher if given an IIT q - takes 2 days to solve it !!!
Why some people succeed is not because of this ed system ..... but because the culture is built to study and take extra tutions and work hard with the raging competition ..... If you choose the cream of the lot , you cannot claim the milk to be equally thick ....
There s a lot to be desired in the Indian schools .. really a lot as far as concept based education is concerned ........... Out of 1 bilion student , if a few thousands have managed to come out , you should not claim that to be the efficacy of the ed system ......... they would have succeeded w/o that ed system also based on their upper genes and hard work .

Fido.
And if you really wish to compare one to one , compare public schools here to Government schools there - I d love that comparision
Jokes apart - there are shortcomings in the schooling system here also - like yesterday someone told me that they permit students to use calculators in 6th std onwards and also the curriculum standards are lower than CBSE / Indian schools .....
But what I really appreciate is as a notable difference is that teachers explain things to you conceptually and sincerely which develops a different outlook altogether ....
It is ironical that when we get some thing free we tend to devalue it ---- I wish the students and families here are more sincere in utilizing the free education here to the fullest .
I rest my case as I would tend to repeat myself ...
Happy Holidays Everyone & a Merry Christmas !!!!
