It really proves your previously mentioned point that you do not have a sister. Just because she mentioned she preferred groom from US, let her suffer? Take a revenge? I would suggest to dig out the $20K angle a bit carefully. Let other's and couple's their own ego not to come in between their relationship. Many marriages break apart due to parents and relatives and their egos. It is easy to ruin the life of husband but in the process you are hurting the wife tremendously and even new member in family.
Talk to him over couple of beers, show empathy, explain the importance of new life in their own life and that too withough accusing him and see if that makes a difference. Sis also need to compromise a bit but given pregnancy situation it is husband who needs to be caring.

I think these comments are uncalled for. There are so many dynamics at play in a marriage, it is best not to judge.
