what are the US immigration formalities at toronto airport? do we have to carry proof of employment as well, like id cards, payslips etc?
I will be flying one way to san fransisco and joining a travel group over there.
In the last leg of journey in the US we will be travelling to Canada by bus.

Are you entering Canada or entering US? Looks like you are entering Canada from US via Toronto. Assuming you are entering on visitor visa into both countries, you will need your valid passport and valid visas for both countries (if you need visas).

He is entering US from Canada. The immigration formalities are done at Toronto airport by US immigration agents.
Make sure you have all the documents like hotel bookings, details of your tour group booking and also the bus ticket to come back to Canada.
Carrying your pay stubs wont hurt too .... you never know it might come in handy.
