How do you deal with when people say "Long time - No see"
& similar stuff. is that what you call excellent communication skills.
I agree totally with Jrf. It is always a challenge for any one to settle in a new place even if it is in our own country India. I am a new immigrant my self moved in to Canada from Uae. We have lived in Uae for about 15 years. I was working in Uae for a good company with very decent salary must confess that life is not that rosy as people think it is. The cost of living in Dubai is very very high and we hardly used to save. Canada to me is a wonderful country but every one has to go through that initial trouble untill u settle down. Ilive in Brampton in a apartment building, we had seen a few desi families grumbled initially but now i see all of them settling down with decent jobs, mind you it may not be in their line but they are very positive about future. i have no complains either my wife got a job in her line in banking even though it was a contract job for six month contract which expired, she will be eligible for Ei now tell me in which country we have this facility for immigrants. i sincerely hope that we will not avail EI for a longer time as she has just cleared her first interview in another bank and we are hoping that Sai baba willing she will get that job too. I started working for a furniture co the very month i landed here as a sales guy i made very decent money working on commission basis from there i moved on to a multinational co as a sales representative on a full time basis. I had two new immigrants who joined with me in furniture co have also moved on to full time jobs in good companies in their lines. My sincere advise to all new immigrants especially for people like me in their early 40's is come with open mind. Be prepared to accept changes. Life is too precious to brood. which looser posts. A looser wants every one to fail like him. Do not read negative posts. Worst come worst if we dont do well we will go back to India Right? Good luck to every one and may god bless every one with best of every thing.

I have come across many people who are talented and communicate really well but got shafted in their job search.
In Canada luck plays a larger role in your career than say in India, US, UK etc.

Try to look around, evaluate yourself & make points for improvement & the most important thing for desi's - ACT on the points
For Example : I was laughing at myself last weekend at Center Island when I saw a desi (probably new) wearing a full formal pants with a full sleeve shirt and black executive shoes in the garden. Now again don't get me wrong, I was actually laughing at myself because I also did the same thing when I came here. And I was just chuckling of how much I have change....

A Delhite in Toronto
Adding to Delhite and Can-De, let's not forget self-confidence. Needless to say, new circumstances would intimidate a new immigrant; however, a re-adjustment of self-confidence as soon as possible definitely helps.
As long as people ghettoize themselves and/or segregate themselves by color/nationality/etc/etc, they lose the opportunity to broaden their mind, and hence remain narrow-minded plus stay deprived of self-confidence.

Discrimination is every where even in India amongst Indians, my parents came to Punjab Mrom Tamil Nadu in 70's and they had to face discrimination in some or other form. But for me, I am a total fit for Punjab. The reason being, I could understand and speak punjabi and know about the culture very well.
Now, I am in Canada and luckily for me I migrated to Cape Breton; hardly any Indians and was forced to talk only locals. The benefit is that now I have experience and communication both and get calls for jobs in GTA.
But having said that, after 4+ yrs here I don't see benefit of Canada other than its citizenship. Which will help me better my job prospects in India since I can travel to many destinations without visa hassles.
Medical system: for the amount that we pay as taxes you can get better medical coverage in India through insurance.
Education system: Quite a few Indian private schools are good in almost all cities in India, their way of education is disciplined as well as innovative. Better than Canada.
Cleanliness: Canada wins hands on, but after living majority of my life in India its not a big negative for me.
Food: Cost of food is increasing in India but still way cheaper than Canada, people are growing organic and is available in the market easily. In Canada people are more health conscious and after learning it here they can rather maintain same lifestyle at a fraction of cost. For rest of the not so organic stuff you can use ozoniser to reduce its toxic effects.
Clothes: You get cheaper and better clothes in India.
Housing: If you have your own house/apartment in India in a decent location then it does not make sense to settle here. But if you don't have a house or unhappy with it in India then don't leave Canada. Indian realty sector requires too much of black money.
Higher Education: Well there is no way India can beat Canada in this, the facilities required are not available in India. But how many of the Indians coming here do any quality research, recently I saw a Phd(Chemistry) learning programming to shift line.
The way I see it, live a poor man's life here in Canada on a 6 month contract job and then 6 months of luxurious life in India. Don't bring your family, you will only favor Canada since the kids will stand a better chance to compete against chinese / koreans if they get educated in India.
The kids can decide their own future after they turn 18.
Ahhhhhhh Chris !!!!!
now I am wonderning why do I write anything on desi blogs...... it's like "Bhense ke aage Bhagawat" (reading bhagwat geeta infront of a buffallo)
first it was racism, then jobs, then corruption, then stress & now chris is taking us to comparison between India & Canada
Please go back to India..... please..... I beg of u !!!
