As mentioned, still pretty open, haven't given much thoughts.
But I am trying to stay around East or south east.

I was also dreaming about this :)

And the first q I had was where to in the US ?

My objectives are better climate ( preference for warm) and good number of IT jobs available metro ... plus a lower cost of living ...

Which would be some states / cities I would provide this ?

Most, if not all, recruiters these days are aware of TN and H1B. The question of "are you eligible to work in the US" and "are you authorized to work in the US" will almost always come up relatively early in the process.

So, you can come clean without any hesitation. As I said before, TN is far easier for recruiters to digest than an H1.

If the position requires a GC or USC (citizenship), there could be a variety of reasons - unwilling/unable to incur cost of TN/H1 (attorney fee, mostly), ignorance about work sponsorship, security clearance, or ITAR requirements.

Whether or not they would be willing to sponsor for TN then becomes a question for the recruiter. H1 has become quite expensive and riddled with paperwork.

If the conversation diverts to the burden of H1, you can always portray the TN as a positive spin and encourage the recruiter to consider.

This question does pop up in an interaction with the HR / recruiter.
I start with, "I JUST need a TN approval (I don't use the word visa) ?"
If they know about it, fair... if not, they would check with their manager. Generally I take a moment to decipher the TN process to them without touching the need to involve a lawyer who could help in making a good TN case.

I've already downsized my living, the scene is conducive but the move could be contingent upon employment primarily...

-- Make sure that you use the keywords - like "You do not need VISA sponsorship". Most of the recruiters know TN. In case they do not, the above sentence makes them feel better! Then you can continue to explain them what TN is.

Like Dimple mentioned, Colorado (and Phoenix, AZ) are very good places with many job opportunities.

Good luck with your job search!

Thanks. Probably stating like this "I don't need a visa sponsorship but an approval known as TN at the US border to cross the border and work which often happens in hours".

I lived in Mesa briefly about 15 years back for about two months. I landed on a cold December day (for Arizona's standard), I was able to manage days with just simple fleece (no hand gloves also). Boy, the real estate was damn cheap and the people were nice. It looks dry though. I also lived in Dallas, TX for the same amount of time (initial days of short term consulting engagements, all before the family). I felt Dallas, TX looked same as Phoenix exception more job opportunities, still very cheap housing.

I don't know much about the Market, but if things are favorable, Raleigh, Cary or Charlotte would be my choice, I know how boring NJ, NY looks (exception to Long Island).

Again, it is not just any sort of comparison but it is my observation after years of living in both nations, Canada looks little more luxurious from an average citizen's stand point, I see much furnished houses on my visits, high end cars and then some sort of "we can handle that attitude". I hope this doesn't start as a major point of discussion but just as a small tangent..

As cdn_dude stated, don't use the word "visa". Most are aware of TN. Just tell them you are eligible to work on TN status and it costs $56 and a couple of hours to get. That usually encourages them to less worried.

Also, comparison of perceptions depends on what regions you are comparing.

If you take the city limits of Detroit, the horn of Africa probably would look much more desirable to live :)

If you take some of the Detroit suburbs, Windsor would like a nasty dump.

Pick a few criteria and go with it, or else, you'll never find the perfect place.

Good luck to you.

a. How is Atlanta as a place with regards to IT job opportunities and climate plus low cost of living combo ?

I was looking at a list of comparison between places in the US for IT jobs , which included NYC & San Jose & LA .. Somehow , Dallas and Atlanta seemed to stand out .

b. What should be a comparable salary in Dallas to 110 K in Toronto?

c. Is it possible to convert TN to H1 ? I know TN is employer specific so - will it have to be the same employer to sponsor the H1 or can we initially be on TN and then switch on to H1 , in case another employer is willing to sponsor us ?
