It is also better to travel during work hours, mostly in the Morning and on the same day you are suppose to join your job.

First, it really makes a good impression and shows your confidence that you are going to get a job.

Second, the officers during day-time are more trained to handle such cases.

There are some good port of entries and some horrible. I believe Peace Bridge is one such good port of entry.

-- Applying on your joining day? I disagree . A week or two before you join is reasonable. This is required to get your affairs in order before making the final move and the officers understand that. Applying for TN "far well in advance" is frowned upon.

Agree with cdn dude. Never show up at the border with a U-Haul truck assuming you will receive approval for TN.

A week to two in advance is reasonable. Usually, immigration attorneys recommend walk-in during business hours at or after 9 am.

There had been some unforeseen temporary setbacks in moving further with the pursuit.

Employes in GTA have shown interest too.

At the crossroads now, whether to focus on pursuing New York (Connecticut actually) opportunity who is acting fast to bring me on board or focus on GTA. Total compensation given the current exchange rate exceeds at least 30-35%.

P.S, I've downsized my already by moving to an apartment with my family for the same personal reason expressed above. If that makes my move easier.

Well, you are in now middle of it, having downsized, having dreamt , and having tampered with the life of a decade, so do not look back , I would suggest. pass thru the cross roads.. CT ( I lived there) offers city as well as country side flavor being in vicinity of NY and still at outskirts of hustle bustle..
I am sure there are better places but job will take you there..

As I read somewhere ... Weak never started and strong ones arrived :-) ..

I also have a hunch that in some years you will return.

Question to some folks who moved to USA.

Say, you got a good offer and you started working. Things go fine, you would settle with TN -> GC or TN-H1b-GC.

What if things head south while in TN1 ?

What if its the case while on H1B ? ( you could stay put till your I-94 expires, look for a H1B transfer etc.,

How would you handle downsizing at work while your GC in progress ?

Doing a bit research reveals that one should switch to H1B as soon as possible after entering through TN1 to establish better footing.

Answer lies in your skill set. You need to assess it for future, will it stay in demand for long?, if yes the risks you are contemplating will be low. One of the mantra of surviving and staying long in US is to stay hands on technical and not moving to be a generalist in order to 'grow' in career to management positions.
You seems to be now in two minds ! well when things head south you can head north...Canada ! The Queen is more generous than uncle Sam.

:) :) Acceptably true with your point on staying technical.
I did not quite get how you jumped into quick judgements on my state of pursuit, what I am looking is a strategy to save you in the event of trimming exercise.

BTW, no job is safe. The positions I felt have been routed many times, so the theory of pursuing something safe is sort of a mirage in IT. Cushy jobs put your self esteem at stake, you would soon realize that you are fighting a battle of sentiments than trend.
