That's the beauty of this site. A "Motley Crew" visits it.

Perhaps the above would explain why you have no hang-ups speaking to "goras" and that one fresh straight from India would. You split when you were 20 and lived in 5 countries since then. I don't know which but if you have interacted with people of many nationalities before, you would take speaking to a gora in its stride. Think of the souls who are fresh off the (Jefferson) airplane and direct from India.
Even other goras from East Europe take great pride in saying they have native born Canadians as friends and parade them to their kind. It is just a natural thing, whether you be brown, chinese, or gora from what the world considers a lesser developed country.

Ja mein Herr ich kann Deutsch zu sprechen aber nur ein wenig.
And I know what an umlaut is. And that "Motley Crew" pun was brand echh actually, even if I penned it!
Hang loose!

If you swell with pride when speaking to a native-born Canadian, that's smashing. Its also irrelevant. I have a lot of respect for a lot of guys who're native-born Canadians too, both white and non (some are colleagues, some are friends).

Hope you don't mean me in particular when you say "you" in that statement, 'cos I make friends with anybody whose cool not just native born Canadians (not read white-it's irrelevant), but I do know some who take great pride in showing off their Canadian friends.I imagine the "you" is just a general "you".
Incidentally, when I was working in a downtown office, right smack in front of the TSX, there was also tension among whites- some with names like Scott Carroll, John Bennett thinking they were better off than Mario Causarano or Joe Petralito, if you get my drift. As a matter of fact, I learnt that there were Anglo-Saxon whites, Latin Whites, and others. Don't know if you've run into such situations. A Kostoula Tasoulis didn't receive the same treatment as a Christine O'Sullivan. Just the vibes I felt in the air, nothing really tangible.
Also FYI, the mainland Chinese would always be against the HK chinese esp if the latter spoke good English. I guess it happens everywhere, even in India. No escaping it, no where.
Like we are veering off the main topic- 'tis a sick one extremely unpalatable- better to talk about music and other more pleasant material.

BKB,

My favs.

U win some...lose some...everything is not justified in this world.
Robert Plant of Led Zep? "WAnna whole lotta love", Stairway to heaven", "Immigrant song" (Just couldn't resist that, yaar)
Sure I saw him and Jimi Page at Slip Disc in Mumbai way back in the 70's. They jammed with Suresh- and Page said he didn't know India produced such good guitarists. Their jam was superb!
Ahaa Mark Knopler- another Dada.
Now Don Henley- you gotta bone me up on this mama, pal!
Communication breakdown, goin' insane, havin' a nervous breakdown.....oh sock it

Yo homes, what age did you split at? Could shed some light on the rationale. Parading your native cdn. born friends just because they're native cdn. born (read white)? Umm...Not so sure about that one, pal. At least I've never done it.
Anyways, you're speedin past the point again, make a U. If you swell with pride when speaking to a native-born Canadian, that's smashing. Its also irrelevant. I have a lot of respect for a lot of guys who're native-born Canadians too, both white and non (some are colleagues, some are friends).
The point though is you can't respect a gora because he/she is a gora. You respect a gora because he/she is an individual who deserves respect. With me so far? And when you make choices in life, its not because XYZ community does the same stuff, its because YOU think its the right thing to do. If you can't live by those, you've got an inferiority complex you need to work on. And that applies to both old and new immigrants.
And to reeaally understand where the inferiority complex comment came from, read up Kap's comment in this thread about Gori and desi chicks.

Kap's a good guy and I know he means well. We're on the same side as far as doing something for our community is concerned, however we obviously don't paint from the same palette.
And now, to really hammer it in (DRUMROLLLL), I'll repeat. My main exception was to the point that Canada is somehow not our country. Its our country allright, at least its my country.
/Switch!
Metallica's kinda before my time, was never into them, although I liked some of their stuff. Listened to a recorded version of the Green Day American Idiot concert on 102.1 The Edge the other day (I think they did it a few days back in TO). These guys rock!
Anyways, someone's gotta start another thread on that, maybe I will. We've digressed enuff here.
