Dear friends,

I am from the middle east and I intend to land in June/ July 2005. I am planning to live initially in Mississauga. I have two school going children (12 and 10 years respectively) who have been studying in the British curriculum. One of my main objectives is to find a good school for both of them in Missisauga and then work backwards to find a suitable apartment/ condo in the vicinity of that school.

Given this background, I request for any guidance/ tips from experienced veterans of Missisauga.

Thanking kind respondents in advance!

You are lucky, get an appartment and area where your appartment is located will have designated school for your children. They are required to attend that school alone. Here education is free.
If you want to opt for pvt. school which in my opinion is not required for Canada because Govt. schools are good here.

Thanks JagoDesi for your kind reply but obviously, it appears that you have missed the point.

I had requested for the names of a few good schools in Mississauga and am planning to decide on my place of residence accordingly.

In case anyone can share their knowledge/ experience on this topic, I shall be very grateful.

Thanks.

It appears you have missed point. Here schools are run by common govt. body. So any where you decide to stay in mississauga, mangement and school curiculum is going to be same. All schools are at same level. No school will have extra features or less features compare to each other. What else do you want to know.

While the curriculum might be the same, amongst other things, what makes a school better or worse is 1. The quality of students 2. The quality of teachers
The first, i.e the quality of students is determined to a large extent by the area the school covers and the majority community in that. As an example the area around Jane and Finch is not considered "good", just as Scarborough is famous for its notoriety. It is the general population inhabiting an area and the activities carried out by them that makes a locality "famous' or "infamous". A school located in an affluent area is likely to have a school where the students are less likely to be provocative. I am not talking of exceptions. The best school can have some of the most horrible students and a "poor" school can produce a Nobel Prize winner.
What the OP therefore wants to know is those areas of Mississauga where the community is peaceful and less violent. I do not know enough about Mississauga to give comments.

It may not be the kind of information that Northstar_3000 is looking for but let me write a few words about 'good' schooling in Canada. As my esteemed colleagues have pointed out that there are public schools everywhere and the standard of teaching etc. is more or less the same. You can hardly distinguish one from the other except for the reasons mentioned by Dio....

However, when we compare public schools with some private schools (a few are run by the Church) we are talking about night and day. It is like IITs and other colleges. The admission in some private schools is through an entrance test-the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) conducted by the same body in both the US and here.

The test is fiercly competitive and only the best students are selected. Moreover, these schools are also very expensive. The annual expenditure can run upto $15,000.

There are highly specialized academies training young scholars for the SSAT. Needless to say, hourly rates these academies charge can be as high as $100.

So if you are looking for really good schools then these are the ones. For a list of all the private schools in Ontario (nearly 800) just click Search Now on the following page:

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/privsch/index.html

And for a list of the best private schools in Ontario, use the following link.

Thanks friends for your valuable inputs so far.

I wholeheartedly agree with DiogenestheCynic that all depends on the students and the teachers even though other things may remain constant like the curriculum, management etc.

Could someone kindly guide me as to what are the good government run schools within Mississauga and even if the housing may be a bit expensive, I am willing to bite the extra costs for the sake of my kids' education.

Thanks for the inputs so far on this subject and I also take this opportunity to thank the Canadian Desi management team and the various contributors/ moderators who are doing a fantastic service to the community.

I am also planning to eventually give more than I receive after I learn the ropes and settle down....hopefully!
Thanks once again!
