The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience". article.php?id=9 |

I've personally interviewed desis very poorly dressed, both in the U.S. and in Canada.
Although not expressed in the best way, Viks does have a point. If you want the honey, don't kick at the bee-hive.
I don't agree its just who you know, it is a combination of your networking skills and your technical skills.
Many desis also need to work on their English (specifically their grammar). Its not the most paramount of requirements however bad grammar won't get you far in interviews.
(Now let me sit tight and wait for a reply like "What you talk about?? Desi speak best English, this Canadian speaking worst Englisht!!!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
That's after getting a job though.
For interviews, you gotta be your best. Your best shirt, your best shoes, your best tie and your best attitude on display. Whether its fair or not, these things do matter.
And yes, nowadays, companies are more specific about the little things. The job-market plays a big factor, another one is how conservative a company's culture is.
Back in the those good ole days of IT mania, you could pretty get away with anything!! And that's not an exaggeration. Now, the very same companies have much stricter policies on a lot of things. The difference is back then, they could not afford to tick you off even for the smallest thing, you had about 50 other job offers waiting. Now they know you're going nowehere fast.
The circle of life, shall we say?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Are you there?
Let me try to put it point wise:
* if we volunteer our services to a Canadian company, they welcome us every day and acknowledge our efforts at the day end with a thank you note. But you ask for a job they do not understand desi accent.....i remember my touring days in India....when i would travel from Bombay to Madras, taxi driver will understand each and every word coming of my mouth till I have not hired his taxi.....but at destination suddenly that man gets into regional fits and will refuse to understand my language except " 500 Rs sir"....What should be desi's opinion for Canadian Company.........
*We smell of curry....I think now desi's wear a perfume or body deo' everyday....I have not come across any desi smelling......infact gori ladki with sleeveless shirts, when try to direct you or raise their arm......Oh my GOD...what a stink........shayad they sweat anti desi perfume!!!!!
*Networking.......i find in this forum at least 2 people????? are in a very good position.......can you provide your phone numbers and mail ID's for desi's to network with you or Golf course address where they can socialize with you.......
*If any of you go to buy advertised product because certain features are advertised on the box.....and if you don't find them in the product on use...what is your reaction???.....go back to the shop or company and complain......or take them to consumer court........why everybody has overlooked this when dealing with CIC......they advertised and called you for skilled work.......do lifting boxes or sweeping floor or making burger require to be skilled..???????..........Federal Court is the place every one of unsatisfied canadian immigrant should be fighting for their right........why should we go back?..........
*Why are agencies so popular in Canada......i don’t find company listing jobs.....it is agencies overflowing with jobs......Are these agencies sniffer dogs for Canadian Company.......smelling curry in asians!!!!
No hard feeling.....with all respect........agree to the canadian experience problem and address it in all possible forum..........
Finally, Canada has always been ready for refugees....their policies and work is made to accommodate refugees and not immigrant.....they were never prepared and refuse to change for immigrant.......half of old Canadian do not know about immigration .......it may sound like a joke....but try to talk to a old Canadian person.......you will get my point....
Let us make the change......they have called immigrant and so Canada has to pull themselves, reform policies and stop being over friendly with capitalist for accommodating immigrants....
They have to understand that an Immigrant was a successful person in respective country and has immigrated to be in a better position....not to deteriorate...............
Although its fruitless to reply here as most of you have branded the system as bad. none of you with the exception of 1 or 2 ppl here have acknowledged that desi's need to better their marketing skills. you have picked up on my wine, golf and curry arguement but none of you with the exception of blueloster have talked abt the fact that you need to upgrade your "selling yourself skills" and not just bank on your existing qualifications and skills.
Every system has its flaws no matter where you go...be it Australia/new zealand/USA or even India.
- My previous exp in india has been in IT industry.
- My education in India has been BCom degree.
- I had no IT education in India.
- I came here in 2000.
- I looked for a job in IT for 3 months and found nothing.
- Worked in the call centre for 2 months and did worked for a libyan guy unloading trucks for a week.
- Worked as a volunteer for CATIE (canadian AIDS Research information Exchange working as database admin for FREE) and Childhood cancer association for 6 months putting in roughly 30 hrs a week.
- Gave my MCSE exam in Dec 2000 and got certified.
- Was awarded certifcation of recognition by the Toronto City and the Mayor's office in early 2001 for my volunteer services with CATIE.
- Got my first job in early 2001 and since this things have been upbeat. My volunteer work and the certification after I came to Canada helped me a lot. My initial references for the first job was given by people in CATIE and Childhood Cancer association.
if you want to see my certificate....don't be shy. I will be more than happy to show anyone here. send me an email and I will be happy to setup a time for this.
I am not the only one here, there are more of us with simmilar success stories should you feel like meeting us.
And as for the golf

don’t get offended ...but don’t get carried away by ur so felt success in Canada...I m working in my field too ........but at what cost and what position........and all ur certificates u talk of are not in upgrade of ur professional skills.....they are volunteer services......what desi call back at home as charity work..........I appreciate ur interest in charity....but please don’t canvas for gore...........they are taking whole world for a ride.....and u r one of the happy passenger..........this forum is right in discussing the bull shit offered by canadian system...lets accept it........ if they need u they are going to worship u.......no matter how u look like.....
It is good that =V made it to the top by fooling or giving canadian their own medicine..........and what is canadian upgrade of skills....or education.....i feel u do not have correct data with u.......India or pakistan uses technology bought from America or Europe......all techies are trained in the best of work environment......desi techies know and have hand on experience of all the software or platforms being used in american supplied system......almost all our state engineering colleges are recognized & member of common wealth......so by default courses offered by these college are recognized…..hw many of u knew about this fact.....do u feel our IIT's or REC are inferior to Toronto University.....IIT and REC offer B Tech courses.....that is what u get from Canadian Engineering college too......infact most of us have come here from multinationals...parent company being American or Europian....where is the question of lack of knowledge.......and in my career while dealing with American companies, never heard of my american counter part returning to college for upgradation of skills!!!!......it is all bull shit to keep u out of the circuit........Please, u and others who feel upgradation of skills are necessary.........think neutral......and then answer.......Are u being pushed to think to change ur career????.......but I fully agree with u......never loose hope ........be determined to go back to the same field where u have been for past so many years........one day we are going to walk over the canadian experience and be accepted for what we are...............By the way I love animals and go to toronto humane society.......hope to see =V there someday..............
I dont think education in india is inferior or skills that one has there is inferior specially when i comes to technology.
But for me I can say that here I am able to work with a wider variety of IT systems and able to get more experience as compared to what I had access to india.
I remember fixing the same old broken dot matrix and laserjet over and over again in the lab whereas where we work with so many different kinds of machines and hardware which is state-of-the art.
I remember going to George brown college in toronto with my brother 4 yrs back and the routers and switches the college had made available to practise for students was the latest stuff around. And I also recall when I was working for infotech Institute in New Delhi they had software programs that emulated routers and switches NOT the real hardware.
I can say for myself that yes the knowledge one can get from reading books etc. and working on systems in India was one thing but actually working on equipment that is worth thousands of dollars here and learning from it is another thing.
