What is Canadian Experience? Immigrants Puzzle!
By:

Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience".

What is Canadian experience?

Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!

How can I get Canadian experience without a Canadian job?

Getting Canadian experience without a job:
Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.

There are many charitable and cultural organizations in Toronto and across Canada that need volunteers.

When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.

The end result is that you gain Canadian experience. Experience that provides you with practical experience about the culture. Practical experience in speaking English and learning the local idiom, expressions, etc. And you gain References - from the person or persons that supervized you; and the people that you work with.

How do I find a charitable organization?
There are a number of groups in Toronto that can direct you to charitable organizations that need your help and in turn can help you to gain Canadian experience.

The Possibilities Project is a great place to start looking. http://www.possibilitiesproject.com/

Dear entrepreneur and Crenshaw,

I do not speak French. I studied in India from the age of ten in boarding school. You are right, many Egyptians know French. I have been able to place many French speaking individuals from Egypt and other African countries like Congo, Algeria, Morocco etc in office jobs paying $14-$19 an hour immediately upon arrival here. These people are saved the humiliation of delivering pizzas.
Entrepreneur- It is good to know someone can corroborate my story and can relate to it. I actually did work in India for 5 years with Bajaj. Due to me being an Egyptian and acting as PR their exports to Egypt multiplied. They then employed more Egyptians to further increase their foothold there. None of us ever got promotions ever. We got substantial increases in pay and commissions, as the business grew but we were always PROs. I remember the manager of the division of exports to Africa commenting to me that adding my salary and commissions I was making more money than he was. Anyway, I am not complaining. I enjoyed my life there and was able to find my life partner there as well. No regrets, but I was just giving you the perspective from our side. I visit India more regularly than Egypt and I am in the process of setting up a deal with Bajaj through an importer here for their Vespas to go to South America. So I am not complaining. Bajaj was a great company to work for and it is still a great company. Perhaps the word discrimination is not the word to use here. I used it for lack of a better word in my knowledge. Perhaps some of you better versed in English can help me out, like BL, freestyler, Teja, Makapao76 and of course both of you Crenshaw and entrepreneur.
Crenshaw- Thank you. I will use the more active form in the next cover letter for anybody who comes to me. Entrepreneur- Your cover letter is very good and very powerful. I will copy it and save it in my files for future use. If any of you can suggest a website which one can visit for more different types of cover letters used in Canada, please post here.
Thank you for all your inputs and Crenshaw and entrepreneur do not fight over technicalities. I feel you are fighting because of comments I made and I do not want to be known as an instigator of verbal pugilism
FYI- most people here in this club have an excellent command of the English Language. Only their accent is different. Very few have an Indian accent like I do since I was in India from when I was 10 in boarding school. In reality, I am more Indian than Egyptian, also due to my Indian wife. My Hindi is also very good. I was one of the top guys in class and most people in convent school in India only studied Hindi just to get the pass mark.
Please do not engage in heated arguments over nothing.

Hi Deep,
Thank you for your kind words. I was actually going to draw up a post for you. You have some very good recommendations. Since you are in Dubai and I was in Dubai I am writing a post just for you. It is on the anvil. It will be a long well thought out post so please bear with me and go through it.

A warm welcome 2 Entrepreneur & Desi Misri . U both have invoked a pleasurable interaction & givena new direction 2 this thread .

A different Q I have on my mind --- Is it necassary 2 have a CV / Covering letter designed in "Canadian contemporary manner" . Will a typical "Indian" resume which covers basic details lucidly fail ?

Desimisri, Thank you for your comments in fact.

Deep

I'm going to sound a bit like 'Makapao' now.....I DO NOT post on this forum to 'blabber about success' - you're irrelevant as far I'm concerned.

My reason for posting (as was Makapao's, I imagine) is simply to provide a view that is different from all of the negative posts that we see here. Life in Canada, is really a lot better than most of you guys make it out to be and it would be nice to see a more balanced perspective going out to prospective immigrant readers in India and the Middle East.

DesiMisri and Crenshaw,

A very warm welcome to both of you! Thanks for contributing your time to the forum, guys.

DesiMisri,

You bring a very unique perspective indeed. It is very encouraging to know that you have recommended the site to your club and friends. Let me assure you that the scope of CanadianDesi is not restricted to people of desi origin only. Although the focus group at this point are Desis, we hope that everyone who can should benefit from the site. So please do continue contributing here and invite your friends to do the same. :)

And crenshaw,

I kinda agree with you. The perception that those who are speaking of their success are "blabbering on and bashing about their success" and those who narrate their negative experiences are exposing the "facts" of Canada is misinformed at best.

Another big misconception is that any desi who has succeded and doing well here is automatically an exception. Since I'm already in Toronto, I KNOW that its a myth, so I can discount it very easily. But I'm guessing for someone who's in India and has never been here, such words would be extremely misleading.

I love Canada as a country. I feel I've been successful here so far in more ways than money. And my objective in saying this isn't boasting, its letting others know that there are so many who are like me and content with their lives here. And I'm not sure if we're the majority, but the notion that we're all exceptions is false. i.e. Unless we redefine the word exception.

Mebbe this site really oughtta be put as a link on the CIC site.

Talking about putting a link on CIC website, I received a reply from the site administrator saying "I will review your Web site for consideration".

Yourstruly,

You're truly doing a wonderful job here, big guy. Some of us are hoping to meet at a coffeeshop next weekend (or the weekend after if it does not work out) in Toronto, would you be able to join us?

Way to go Teja- do keep us posted on what CIC has to say. Even though I don't see too many of your insightful posts of late 'tis good to know you are working behind the scenes to promote this site. That really is constructive and big time!

For all of you guys who wish to meet next Sunday at the Toronto Convention Center, I am game. I know what Chandresh loks like, so I shall seek him out. Maybe he should be the groundsman if everybody knows him. Then we can go have a coffee somewhere. O/w we can directly meet at a coffee shop nearby. Whatever you decide. Please also specify a time. I would like to make a suggestion here. Since Desimisri has expressed a desire to meet Mishtar India and if Mishtar India is coming, why not invite Desimisri?
