Just a thought...if these people are doing thier jobs 'well', is there REALLY a need for AUTHENTIC degrees / certificates??

This could apply to any damn job on this planet...as long as you can do the job 'well', degree and certification is secondary IMO.. Our ancestors never studied MBA yet conducted thier business very well...most corporate entrepreneurs ARE NOT engineers / scientists or MBAs, but logical and rationally thinking individuals...

The whole concept of putting your certificates / degrees on your resume is prove your basic capability and understanding of the nature of the job...once you have proven you can do the job, what degrees / certificates you carry should not be given so much importance.

Would like to have fellow CDs opinions on this.

Hiren,

Would you go to a Doctor that doesnt have an 'authentic' degree? Would you send your child to one?

Education is not only about learning how to do something (ie/ job skill) it is about learning, about enhancing one's ability to critically analyse, to develop breadth and depth of knowledge. It is to pass tests/examinations that assess one's level of competence.

just my opinion~

Wish employers in Canada would understand the same thing :D Sorry couldn't resist the temptation :)

If u r floating a big company and u had a choice of hiring Bill Gates or Mr. Joe (M.Eng, MBA ) as the CEO who would you chose. You can take Joe I'll take Bill Gates and make millions. :)

Comparing a teacher to a doctor is totally 2 different things. Doing ur M.Ed etc doesn't mean u have earned the distinction of being a good teacher. A teacher has to have a lot of other qualities which cannot be taught by anyone. It comes from inside. I'll prefer to send my kid to a person who understand what a teacher is and not a MEd or MBA just thinking oooh this job gives me 50K + 3 mths of holidays each year + all the time off by striking each year :D
Mother Teresa didn't become one of the biggest Social Worker by getting a degree. Nobody taught her but a lot of Social Workers can learn a lot from her.

Florence Nightingale, had basic training in nursing and at home training about mathematics. But the reforms she bought in how come no highly trained doctors, health ministers etc could think about. It's something also from inside which makes u what u r.

that's my 2 cents.

If one of the most recognised doctors of the world says, u require a surgery, would you get it done, or still try to go around to other doctors and find out if that's true.

Well, degree does help you open the door. Getting into it and survival is purely your own potential.

Gold, if you have both!

Pure potential needs some struggle/proof. But that's just initial phase.

I dont think they are different in that people in both professions (here doctor and teacher) require more than a degree to be good doctors/teachers. A doctor also has to have qualities not taught in school.
How do you know that the teacher or doctor or business professional really cares about their work and not just their salary and benefits? You will know that through experience with that person right?

I know this is offtopic but I just remembered it...during my social work studies in university Idont think we studied Mother Teresa at all. Thats weird.

I agree with above: Passion is what makes a great... (fill in the blank here).
If a doctor tells me I need surgery, I would still get a second and third opinion (however this is an entirely different subject). Surgery is different!

In my opinion, in certain professions like doctor, techer, dentists degrees are important as you have to demonstrate knowledge in their respective fields. However, certain professions like management need both some qualification, some street smartness and apetite for taking risks. There are many people who are rewarded for their street smartness and risk taking even though they donot have management degrees especially in North America.

Even back in India, I have met so many people with just bachelor's degrees but who can sell the products drawing much higher salaries than a person who is chartered accountant + MBA but works in accounting.
